About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore the world, meet interesting people, and improve the lives of everyone.

ABOUT ME

We have been traveling together, on and off, for the past 3 years. We were house sitting in Costa Rica for a year (ended last December) and immediately departed for Southeast Asia after Costa Rica, where we spent 5 months traveling around the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia. Our dreams are to start a sustainable community (or be part of an existing one) and meet great people who will, collectively, improve the lives of all people on the planet and serve as templates for the replication of other communities around the world. We believe that the current world paradigm is unhealthy and unsustainable and would like to be part of the effort to transition into a more sustainable, nature/people based way of life. We had numerous couch surfers at our house in Costa Rica, but our friend technically hosted them and used his account for all interactions. Nonetheless, we'd love to host couch surfers in the future when we have a more permanent place to live!

PHILOSOPHY

Suspend all judgements related to negative thinking and enjoy the planet and all of the incredible things associated with it! As native Americans, we were raised to believe that we should be fiercely independent. However, we believe that a world view such as that is unhealthy and only leads to isolation and unhappiness. We both ultimately want a communal life, surrounded by people who help each other and function as a unit, free of ego and free of the "rat race" mentality.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We believe that the exchange of information about life experiences and how to improve life, is a crucially important aspect of personal interactions. Until we are able to host couch surfers, we hope that our friendship and exchange of ideas will serve to payback for the hospitality that we receive while couch surfing. We also enjoy making Thai food for new friends whenever we can find the proper chili paste!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosted couch surfers in Costa Rica through a friend of ours. We lived in the guest quarters of the house, and our friend (who lived in the front of the house) managed the couch surfers with his account. We had a lot of involvement and interaction with our surfers and often cooked for them and lead activities (such as hiking through the nearby national park!).

Interests

We both love anything nature-related - all rainforests, oceans, volcanoes, waterfalls, etc. and LOVE experiencing places such as those with new friends. While house sitting in Costa Rica, we often guided new friends through the national parks and introduced them to the "secret places" that we had discovered.

Music, Movies, and Books

All rock music, ranging from 1960's American rock to modern American/British rock. Sara also likes country music but Mike does not. We also both happen to like Indonesia's pop/rock band, Peterpan, and would love to see them live when Ariel (the lead singer) gets out of jail :) Mike's favorite book is "Shantaram" and Sara's is "Alas Babylon". We love to read but really only get to do it while traveling.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of Sara's favorite experiences was exploring the incredible landscape and wildlife of Bako National Park (Malaysian Borneo). One of Mike's favorite experiences was hitchhiking from Morocco to Mauritania and then hopping freight trains into the desert.

Teach, Learn, Share

We love discussing just about anything - as long as it doesn't revolve around getting rich to enrich yourself or enriching your ego. Mike loves talking about things he finds in the rainforest (very interested in assembling an expedition for Pulau Tioman) and surfing (i.e. with surfboards).
