About Me

CURRENT MISSION

This world with its wonderful inhabitants tickles me. I like to tickle back.

ABOUT ME

**Regarding Ben's and my upcoming Santa Barbara trip for Ben's college orientation session, we've landed couch space for Wednesday! (thank you, Nick!) ... so we are just looking for any piece(s) of the Thurs, Fri, Sat, remainder - I'm still canvasing!**

Home is in Anchorage, to the South of Westchester Lagoon. That's within walking distance of downtown, and even nearer to the Coastal Trail. Just a few minutes (7, on average) from the airport. I enjoy travel, when the opportunity affords. Particularly alternative/adventure/desert travel. Mexico is lovely. Alaska is unmatched.

Early reading influences included Jung, D.T. Suzuki, Alexandra-David-Neel (anything to with Zen or Tibetan Buddhism), Alan Watts, lots of poetry, etc.

Hiking and cycling (I love my Bike Friday) are among my favorite activities. I've many miles in the Chugach, Alaska Range, Sierras, and other country under these boots. I'm comfortable on glaciers and ice.

There are few things to equal walking in the mountains.

I'm comfortable around most any water, and love living near the ocean and it's many moods and faces. I can find a universe in a tide pool or bay.

I have done a fair bit of paddling (canoe, kayak), rafting, and SCUBA. First SCUBA certified in 1974! I've lived out of a kayak for as long as two months. I fished commercially in Alaska (Bristol Bay driftnet) for 17 years and I'm comfortable on any sort of vessel in any weather. Absolutely weatherproof, I'm pleased to be on such comfortable terms with our aquatic world.

Having spent a good deal of time in SE Alaska, Kodiak Island waters and Kachemak Bay, I'm looking fwd to exploring Prince William Sound in greater detail. There's a lifetime or two right there.

I've lived in Berkeley and San Francisco. Ashland, Oregon and Utah. I was born in Georgia and spent a good bit of time in the Blue Ridge Mountains or near Savannah. I do enjoy motorcycle touring. Years ago I was an avid aviator. I'm not currently flying. At the intelligent end of the spectrum, I *do* have a sense of humor. This world, with it's inhabitants, tickles me.

Politically and socially? Way to the left.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've done a fair bit of couch-surfing, mostly in Canada, and a good bit of hosting here in Anchorage, with several visitors due over the next few weeks.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

random; extensive hitch-hiking/ "backpacking"/ communal living, motorcycle touring.
My "CouchSurfing" experience has gotten well underway this summer, with three very successful trips to Canada, mostly having to to with Ben's graduating from high school, or his competing in the Canadian Nationals rowing competion on the Henly course in St. Catharines, Ontario.

I'm done a fair bit of hosting, including launching a young coupe on their Alaska adventure by lending to them all the camping necessaries.

Visitation to Alaska is just ramping up with several folks due over the next few weeks. We're looking forward!

Amazing thing(s) - I'll take this one plural.

Airplane (single engine) motor blows up in front of me. Black smoke, oil on the windscreen. I'm the pilot. Glide to a boulder-strewn glacial outflow plain.

Woke up with arm in mouth of very large mammal in the Canadian wilderness.

Vessel's pilothouse window smashed out by large, cold wave, in my face, while at the helm.

The aurora. Whales. Storms. Octopi. OOBE. Weather.
