UPDATED: 07-07- 2017
Well I've finally completed the 10th year of my odyssey … 10 continuous years of NON-STOP travel. Never knew I would come this far!!! Whew ...
And it all started so very far away and long ago, one summer day in 07-07-2007 ...
At first glance, it appears to many I’m living "the life" - yes go wherever I fancy, stay for as long as I like, or simply leave with the next passing breeze ... but really, aside from the fun and adventure, there’s the constant search for a nice bed to lay down, living out of a suitcase, packing for all seasons, trying to make ends meet with often a meager allowance when better times came and went... ah but then the good times are well worth the efforts.
There’s never a dull moment … not in my wildest imagination thought I would somehow sit next to a live tiger for a photo-shoot; or set foot on "James Bond Island" (Thailand); traipsing through the ruins of Ta Prohm (Angkor Wat) like a Tomb Raider; or gazing across the river at the glimmering white marbled Taj Mahal. On top of that, went into the wilds of Alaska searching for Aurora Borealis, embarked on a walkabout across Kakadu (Australia). Even entered Sleeping Beauty's Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein). Then rode a camel caravan into the Sahara (Morocco) sands. Waded with the sharks (well at least the little baby Black Tips) along the shallow turquoise blue lagoons of French Polynesia. And before I knew it, I was climbing the white-washed hilly towns of Santorini (Greece); or sipping tea in Monet’s garden (Giverny, France); while contemplating about the millions of Monarch butterflies I would later encounter in their winter Mexican forest sanctuary. Then waking up to sounds of countless chattering macaws within the vast Amazon jungle. Ah, not to forget Machu Picchu when lightning striked just feet away! And before long, I was seeking Nessie at Loch Ness, Scotland; or gazing at the Jungfrau from a cozy cafe in the Swiss Alps. But whether chasing myriads of waterfalls in Plitvicka Jezera, Croatia, or rambling deep in the million year old jungles of Malaysia, or hiking the glaciers of the Canadian Rockies, you can say that ( I quote from "Bladerunner” ) - “I’ve seen things you people wouldn't believe ... but all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain …” Unfortunately... unless you keep them "alive" - in your minds ... and forget me not.
... whichever way the wind blows ........
Till a voice, as bad as Conscience, rang interminable changes
On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated - so:
"Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges -
"Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!" ……….
The Explorer, Rudyard Kipling
UPDATED: July 2014
Now into my 8th year of continuous traveling, that included a few pet/house-sittings, and even some hosting (and rescuing) of fellow CSers/travelers along the way (not to leave out teaching & enriching many people with knowledge & cooking skills amongst many things), it still never ceases to amaze me how it all began long ago & so far away ...
On 07-07-07 a crazy notion made me cast aside all familiar comforts and security of my cozy life to go on a "walkabout" just to figure out what this world and life is all about. I just didn't want to be stuck in a rut, like most of my friends, that I would loose sense of living and let life pass me by. I wanted to experience life to the far extent - to venture into the unknown - to boldly do few men dare to do ...
And that's how it all began ...
I have traveled and lived life 'par hasard' (by any means) - meaning I don't have a specific destination nor plan. Here, there, and a little bit of everywhere is all there is to my schedule - to travel leisurely to all the places I've always wanted to go but didn't have the time nor chance before. Then I would stay for as long as I like or simply leave with the next passing breeze ...
On 08-08-08, after over a year of wandering, I've decided to keep up this insanity; perhaps somewhere along the way I'll find a place to call home and then some.
On 09-09-09 I thought, everywhere seemed just as interesting as the previous, so why not explore another year and see how that goes ...
That is if the wind is still blowing favorably ...
Thus the insanity, I mean adventure, continues...
On 10-10-10 I realized I was more or less on an adventurous streak, visiting monumental places of interest and quite liking it ... so the travel & saga continues.
On 11-11-11 I thought since I've come so far, why not continue until 12-12-12? So far I've found & lost love along the way so perhaps I may find a place to call home too. Otherwise I'll run out of "same" numbered dates (13-13-13?)!
Well 12-12-12 came and went but still no hint of where to settle ... I thought perhaps December 21st would put an end to it what with all those revelations, rumors and predictions as pertaining to the end of the Mayan calendar. Didn't happen. Neither a whimper nor a big bang...
Oh well, guess I'm compelled to wander this earth a bit longer then ... perhaps to tell about my "gold" tale until that "*ancient mariner" spell is lifted? Besides Ulysses took ten years to reach home, so what's with a few more? Onwards with this **Odyssey?
Here's to whichever way the wind blows ........
*The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
**Odyssey by Homer
And heavens no, I'm not 88! (I won't want to travel by
then) Figure people would put two & two together
and know I'm such a kidder. Actually 88's a pair of
lucky numbers (in Chinese that is).
MORE? Well I was born in Asia. My parents were from Shanghai, China. Last place I lived in was California, before I decided to pack up everything and abandon the rest to go see the world. Then later on I stayed in Florida for a short while, and recently in Asia.
Oh and I don't smoke nor do drugs and alcohol - got to stay alert & healthy for those insane trips you know.
"Where have I traveled since I started July 2007?" people ask. Well starting from San Francisco, I went on to ...

PHILOSOPHY
To live life with finesse & elegance and not get stuck in a rut ... and to boldly go where no man dare go - that is to abandon the security of a home, job, and familiar surroundings just to wander off and chance the unknown - all for the sake of adventure (or insanity) ...

Ben is a trustworthy, relaxed, down to earth, great guy. His knowledge base runs deep, and he has a wealth of experience on many topics that he is more then willing to share. I believe he is the epitome of what couch surfing is; Kind gestures shown in honor without expectation of reciprocation. It was a pleasure having him stay with me, and he always made sure to keep things tidy, and as noted, was keen on assisting with meals. I didn't get tired of having him, and he's actually full of humor. He likes showing his photos, and he should, they are great!

Ben was a very considerate guest. He stayed with us during a busy week but he adjusted well to our schedules and he even helped us make masks for a costume party. He took care of our place while we went out of town and cooked us some delicious meals.
OneWayTickets, Santa Cruz, United States
Ben is a very thoughtful person. Not only was he interesting but he cooked ... Add to that interesting conversation and an amazing photo library ... He also treated us to a day at the Wild Animal Park.
Darcy Bergh, San Diego, United States
Ben ... it was nice that we had probably one of the most experienced Couchsurfers in the world! What an interesting life style. And, as others have said, he is neat and tidy.
Doug & Alice Diamond, San Diego, United States
Ben was a polite a courteous surfer, he went out of his way to make sure our place was clean and tidy when he left. Ben has a unique perspective...
Taylor Dykes, Seattle, United States
What a wonderful human to share some time with! Ben imparted a sweet gentle presence during his days with us, sharing inspiring stories ... A gift-giver, we all couldn't have been more fortunate to host him. Clean, unmean, modest and friendly machine!
Paul McNeil, Bainbridge Island, United States

He was a very polite, clean and thoughtful guest. Ben was very considerate and left us with some very nice souvenirs to remember him by. He also had many interesting travel stories to tell about his amazing journey.
Katherine Crossman, Calgary, Canada
Ben is a wonderful, generous man. It made me very happy to hear his many stories and see his pictures from his adventures around the world. He is kind and sweet and likes to give little trinkets he's collected on his travels... Thank you Ben, I'll consider you a friend always. Once you get settled, I'll have to come see you!
Alyssa Clark, San Francisco, United States
He offered help with chores, offered to cook, and was very polite and considerate of everyone in the household.
I would happily host him again, ... what little conversation we had made me very interested, curious and want to know more about his life, talents, travel, and experience.
Shannon Sweeney, Seattle, United States
Ben is a fantastic person and guest. He is full of stories and I am in awe in all that he has done since his adventure has begun... I loved sharing dinner with him. We would host Ben again in a heart beat!!!
Cynthia Januszewski, Seattle, United States
Ben has been a very nice guest, very interesting to talk with. He has been very patient with my wife, to teach her English and how the stock exchange work. I warmly recommend him as a guest

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
A bit too much I'm afraid ... but read the refs above for an overall view. In a nutshell, I came bearing gifts, then I cooked (if so requested) and cleaned up too (as I always did my own mess) and entertained with stories and photos and dispensed other knowledge as desired or requested ... All in all, I've made a lot of people happy, some quite rich (when they made use of my financial advice), and just as many enriched by the Ben's cooking method (my quick & easy Asian style cooking that I teach).
Sometimes I did house or pet sitting while the host went off on their mini vacation or business. Other times I rented a place and hosted while I can ...
And I've even rescued a few stranded CSers & other travelers along the merry way ...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
blah, blah, blah ...
All those ...
moments will be lost ...
in time,
like tears ... in rain......
------------------------------------------------------
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
------------------------------------------------------
"There must be some kind of way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief..."
"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us, who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate..."
Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl...
(n 'tis time 4 me 2 go)
------------------------------------------------------
... Forthwith this frame of mine was wrenched
With a woeful agony,
Which forced me to begin my tale;
And then it left me free.
Since then, at an uncertain hour,
That agony returns:
And till my ghastly tale is told,
This heart within me burns.
I pass, like night, from land to land;
I have strange power of speech;
That moment that his face I see,
I know the man that must hear me:
To him my tale I teach...
------------------------------------------------------
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep .......
------------------------------------------------------
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
------------------------------------------------------
There's no sense in going further - it's the edge of cultivation,"
So they said, and I believed it - broke my land and sowed my crop -
Built my barns and strung my fences in the little border station
Tucked away below the foothills where the trails run out and stop:
Till a voice, as bad as Conscience, rang interminable changes
On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated - so:
"Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges -
"Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!" ……….
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Once upon a time, I have never in my wildest dreams thought I would someday sit next to a live tiger, set foot on "James Bond Island" (Ko Khao Phing Kan / Ko Tapu), traipsing through the jungle ridden ruins of Angkor Wat, or gazing across the river at the Taj Mahal.
On top of that I went into the wilds of vast Alaska looking for Aurora Borealis, embark on a walkabout downunder across the land of Oz (Australia). And even entered Sleeping Beauty Castle (aka Schloss Neuschwanstein). Then rode a camel into the Sahara sunset.
Additionally I've walked amongst sharks (well at least the baby Black Tips) along the shallow turquoise reefs and blue lagoons of the Polynesie Francaise atolls.
And amazingly more to come!!!
Yes, I can say (and quote from "Bladerunner") I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... (but) all those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain...
but before they do, I will share them with you ... just check out my photos in Picasa.
But through it all I am amazed at how trusting most of my hosts are. Most simply trusted me as if I'm family ... And some even took off leaving me in charge of their place!
Yes I've found people that are more kind, more generous, more trusting than my own friends & family!
That to me is truly amazing!
Even more so than orbiting around Jupiter on Elara ...
Lately some other amazing things cropped out. I've found that my adventures and lifestyle has inspired & motivated others:
My dear, dear friend Ben,
You don't know me but I'd like to tell you that your
journey has touched my heart!! I wanted to tell you
that we do need free-spirited people like you in this
world so that they can remind the rest of the world
that this is still a beautiful place, that there is
still wonderful people out there, that there's still so
much to learn, still so many paths to follow and that's what life is about.
I hope you can continue to inspire others the way you
inspired me.
Much Love, V (VN of Miami FL, USA)
Just by reading your profile and your story I felt a breeze through my bones which commanded me to add you as friend without meeting you in person. You are the first person I've done this with ... I am a great admirer of people who dare to fulfill their dreams ... God Bless you in your endeavors my friend. Meeting you in real life would be an extensive privilege for me.

In 2015, on my 8th year of nonstop travels, I have decided to give one former lucky CS host a special treat - a fully paid vacation hosted by me. I randomly decided to pick the first CSer who cared enough to contact me to say “hello”. Well, lo and behold someone did, and I had to keep my promises. So I invited her to tour Malaysia (her choice) with me, including a train trip to Singapore, all fully paid for, staying in nice, decent hotels, including meals and other expenses. Not to mention a fully paid return flight on Malaysian Airways (not cheap AirAsia) just to add a little finesse and class.
It went quite well and perhaps I will start another one sometime soon. We’ll see.
Teach, Learn, Share
Throughout our travels, no doubt we are sometimes helped by others in times of difficulties - and we cannot always pay back directly (even though we hope to). But if we remember their kindness and use that to help others in return, then hopefully they too will do the same to still others - then soon the world would be a better place to live in. And that's all that should be expected of us - to spread the kindness.
We do what any good decent person would normally do. Don't do so expecting something in return, or feeling that you are owed something ...
Instead of the usual yada yada, blah blah blah stuffs, let me impart a bit of travel wisdom gathered from my 11 years of traveling experience...
Just remember this … if you soar high enough above the clouds - there's never any dark clouds or rain - just eternal sunshine! Let the winds guide you …
What I Can Share with Hosts
See for yourself:
Ben is a very trustworthy person. He helped with cooking and was always concerned about me eating enough :) Thank you for visiting and playing the piano and sharing your gifts with the family.

Ben is a respectful, easy person to host. He is also a good cook and that made him an even more welcome guest. Ben gives, he shares, and he teaches. It was good to get to know him.
Geraldine Hutchings , Vancouver, Canada
Ben bestowed several thank you gifts upon me which showed that he took the time to get to know me and my personal style. He is a very considerate and trustworthy guest. Ben cooked for my family and me several times - delicious Chinese meals! Thanks for the cooking lessons! Feel free to come back anytime, Ben, you would be most welcome in my home.
Nancy Gienow , Edmonton, Canada
Ben is a host's dream - excellent and creative chef - when given the run of the kitchen and cupboards, he made meals that were interesting, delicious and imaginative. Easy going, respectful and hard to see go.
Alexis Tristan , Seattle, United States
Ben is a trustworthy, relaxed, down to earth, great guy. His knowledge base runs deep, and he has a wealth of experience on many topics that he is more then willing to share. I believe he is the epitome of what couch surfing is; Kind gestures shown in honor without expectation of reciprocation. It was a pleasure having him stay with me, and he always made sure to keep things tidy, and as noted, was keen on assisting with meals. I didn't get tired of having him, and he's actually full of humor. He likes showing his photos, and he should, they are great!
Brad Ralph , Victoria, Canada
A really nice and generous person. He were really independent during this three days. He taught us how to cook Chinese very well ! We are really glad to meet you. You were our first couchsurfer and you give to us the desire to take lots others CS !
BIELTAN , Montpellier, France
Ben is an excellent guest. He brings presents, cooks delicious stir fry, has interesting travel tales, is easy to engage in conversation, and is very independent if you don't have time to be a tour guide. We would gladly have him over any time.
Cosmicos , Victoria, Canada
Ben Lee had been like a god sent present. We had a few couch surfers come at the same time and here comes this nice person who not only helps us with the showing of the city to the other travelers, but actually becomes the house chef and keeps all very well fed (what a treat).....
it was an honor to have you part of our household.
Noah Strasbourger , Seattle, United States
