One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was a kid, we would spend vacations out in the Carolinas, and one summer the beaches were kept clear by reports of incoming hurricanes, but it wasn't enough to stop my dad and me to stop fishing. Fishing off of this pier into the ocean, we ended up catching a young shark, and I'll always remember the wonder of reeling in this creature in the middle of the driving rain, up against the ocean. I couldn't get over how wild it was that we'd caught this thing, still going after bait in the middle of this violent, chaotic weather, and the way its skin was smooth when stroked in one way, but became like sandpaper when you went 'against the grain'. We threw him in the ocean and drove home in a minivan through the growing storm.
