About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to eat more sushi

ABOUT ME

I have just moved from the beautiful south-west of England to the beautiful south-west of Australia! I love the sea, and I spend my workdays researching marine bacteria, and my weekends sailing and diving.I think I'm friendly, funny, down to earth, and easy-going. I'm a sociable person and generally get on with most people - but I'm also very independent and enjoy spending time on my own or with a book!I'm an eternal student at heart - I enjoy learning new things, and am up for trying anything once. Some of the things I do more frequently are: music (listening, going to gigs, strumming a few tortured chords, warbling in the shower); walking; camping; dancing like a crazed monkey; being crafty; writing; swimming in the sea; cooking, drinking, eating.I love the world and I love meeting new people from different countries and cultures - it keeps me open-minded and has given me some amazing friends. I care about the environment and I'm a veggie for that reason, but if it means trying a new food or flavour, then I'll be flexible ... and nothing can stop me eating sushi. I don't take myself too seriously and my favourite thing in the whole world is laughing and making people laugh.

PHILOSOPHY

Keep laughing, keep drinking, keep loving, keep learning ... I don't have a philosophy but these are the things I like to do :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I couchsurfed for the first time in Vancouver in 2010, and loved every minute of it. Since then I've been to Brooklyn, which was also an incredibly positive experience, and I'm hoping to couchsurf my way around both Japan and New Zealand this year!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have been completely blown away by the generosity and good humour of my couchsurfing hosts so far. I am so glad I discovered this great way to see a place and make new friends around the world, especially as a female who often travels alone.

Interests

The sea; sailing; reading and writing; thinking; feminism; cats; birds; learning about mythology, history, culture, language and stories; science; dancing; making things; being crafty; cooking and baking; eating and drinking; trying to play guitar (badly); sea-swimming and scuba-diving; walking and camping; laughing with friends; travelling and enjoying the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love pretty much all books but some favourite authors include Iris Murdoch, Phillip Pullman, Jonathan Safran Foer, Kurt Vonnegut, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Scarlett Thomas, George Orwell, Agatha Christie and George Orwell. I am also a Harry Potter geek 8)

I also love music, and will listen to most types, especially folk, rock, indie, Latin, funk, ska, hiphop and a bit of pop. I love guitars and struggle constantly with the fact that I can't really play one. Most of all, I love live music!

I'm not much of a film buff but generally enjoy anything silly, funny or interesting. I really love The Life Aquatic! I also love my TV series box sets; current and all-time favourites being Black Books, Green Wing, Being Human, Flight of the Conchords, Gavin & Stacey, Dr Who and Fawlty Towers :)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I see amazing things all the time! I don't think you have to be well-travelled to do that ... one of the most amazing sights I can remember is when I was on a walk in Sussex, England, and we came upon a field that was absolutely covered in spiderwebs between each blade of grass. The sun was setting and hitting the field at just the right angle so it looked like a field of rainbows!!!! Awesome.
