ABOUT ME

Right now I'm living in Santander, Spain, teaching English to high school students in a small agricultural village outside of town. This is my first time on this side of the Atlantic and I am SO excited to be here and to be adventuring and experiencing so many new and different things and meeting so many awesome people.

I am currently really stoked about a number of things. First and foremost, being in nature. My soul craves to be connected to the earth and the abundance of life that grows and lives on and in it. I could walk through the woods or along the beach or ANYwhere natural all day long, just looking at everything, playing in the water, climbing trees, and just appreciating my surroundings.

I am also very excited to be on the road to fluency in my second language--Spanish. I love how learning another language opens your mind and heart in ways you never expect. I hope to continue learning new languages my whole life.

I love being active. Yoga, running, hiking, dancing, hula hooping, frolicking, board sports and ultimate frisbees are a few of my specialties. I really want to get into rock-climbing and surfing when the time is right.

Another passion of mine is art and crafting. I love drawing and painting and crocheting and art projects of any kind, really. Animals are another love, as well as music--creating it as well as dancing to it, or relaxing to it. I ESPECIALLY love live music.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I haven't had any couch surfing experiences yet! I have many friends who have done it and I've heard awesome stories.

Intereses

What grabs my attention? Colors. The sound of the wind blowing through the trees. Raw creative expression, whatever form it may come in. Strong fearless eye contact. The humor that can be found in basically any situation. The wonder in every moment. The stories people tell. The way a caterpillar inches across a leaf. The laws of physics we unconsciously live by. The magic of science that allows our bodies to function.

How do I spend my time? Asking why. Allowing myself to remain open to the people and world around me. Doing yoga. Reading. Drawing. Exploring. Playing. Philosophizing. Writing. Singing. Dancing. Trying to get lost somewhere, then found again. Climbing to the top of mountains, walking around on the beach, hiking around in the woods. Learning stuff on Wikipedia. Watching TED talks. Talking to people. Looking at the clouds in the sky. Making friends with animals I encounter. Doing what I feel like doing when I feel like doing it. Seeking balance.

I am also interested in continuing to learn about history, medicine, health, politics, art, music, literature, language, ecology, botany, physics, astronomy, geology, holistic, alternative, and natural forms of medicine, psychology, cultures around the world, why people do what they do and why the world is the way it is. I especially love when I encounter something that I don't yet have the capacity to understand.

It's kind of overwhelming sometimes how many things I'm interested in. I'm at a very expansive and exploratory phase in my life.

When I was in Ecuador at the beach, swimming around about 100 feet out in the water with my friend, we heard someone yelling "Ayuda! Ayuda!" We realized there was an old man near us who was drowning. No one else around was seeming to do anything about it, so we swam over to him, and each took an arm, swimming him to shore. He couldn't support himself with his legs when we got there, and by that time a crowd had gathered, but no one was stepping up to help us carry him to the beach. Finally, after yelling at people to help, someone did. If we hadn't have swam to him to help him, he would have drowned. He later came over to thank us for saving his life.

I have worked a lot with the elderly, taking care of them in their homes or in a facility, helping them with whatever they needed. There were numerous moments when I was struck by how much simple human connection means to someone who completely relies on others for survival and for the simple functions of life. I was taught amazing lessons of humility, empathy, and patience through this work. And I was also taught the value of my own life as well as the lives of others.

I have also worked with children a lot--ages 4 to 14, at summer camp and at science camp. I have taught them archery, how to make dream catchers, all about the elements of soil and physical and chemical weathering, and I have told countless stories to 4 year olds about the faeries, elves, gnomes, and unicorns that live in the woods in and around Portland, and how we can help them care for the forest. The light in the eyes of children when they learn something, or when they are so happy and excited to be doing nothing more than what is right before them, is one of the most beautiful things I have been a part of.
