About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Although they are ever in flux, my two main goals are to 1) learn how to surf and 2) learn how to cook chapati.

ABOUT ME

Hello, fellow couchsurfers!

Ever since I embarked on my first international traveling adventure six years ago I have been hooked! I studied history and biology at university, went to graduate school to work in education, will attend graduate school again next year, and speak a few languages here and there. I love meeting new people, exploring new places, and trying new things.

PHILOSOPHY

I am a staunch supporter of the golden rule.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am only surfing for right now, but as soon as I return to my home I hope to begin hosting to return the favor!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couchsurfing is the best thing to happen to travel since global infrastructure improvements. I have absolutely adored every host and traveler I have met through couchsurfing.org and recommend this community to everyone I meet. It has entirely reshaped my understanding of traveling and my perception of people around the world. The idea of it and my experiences with it are almost too wonderful to articulate to those that have yet to experience its awesomeness (but I babble on and gesticulate anyways in best efforts to explain!)

Interests

I love movies and museums and sherbert ice cream. I love to spend my time traveling and enjoying the outdoors, whether it is biking, climbing, hiking, or camping, I really love it all. I am huge fan of reese peanut butter cups, cooking, sleeping in, good music, and bizarre documentaries. I am passionate about education and the environment, and I enjoy getting to know people.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Angus & Julia Stone, Sylvan Esso, Ben Lee, Bon Iver, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino, Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkel, Vance Joy, The Cranberries, Eric Hutchinson, The XX, the list goes on and on and on.

Books: My absolute favorite book is The Varieties of Religious Experiences by William James. Read it, and you will be enlightened. I also love all books by Barbara Kingsolver and John Steinbeck. I enjoy reading in general, though, and appreciate any and all recommendations.

Movies: There isn't a way to begin to compile a comprehensive list of all the movies I love. However, a few that come to mind are as follows: Balto (Have you seen it? No? Watch it.), Hocus Pocus, The Garden State, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Babadook, and The Count of Monte Cristo.

TV: The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Arrested Development, and anything else that is ingeniously hilarious.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It is difficult to narrow down my list of moments that left me awestruck. An inadequate representation is as follows:

1) Horseback riding in the steppe of Mongolia.

2) Bungee jumping off of the bridge above the Zambezi river between the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I would love to share with my hosts or fellow surfers all about my many years living in Tanzania. I could teach you some basic swahili and make you some swahili food too! I also make a mean groundnut soup and rice balls, which you'll love if you like peanut butter. I also can bake you a great cake or cookies.

Learn: I enjoy learning all about the history of really anything and would be more than happy to learn about another person's travel and life experiences.

Share: I would like to share some of my interests in music and books and I hope to be introduced to some must-reads and must-listens as well.
