About Me

I'm an adventurous 22 year-old English guy, teaching English in Moscow.

Interests

LANGUAGES. I could talk all day about languages, and theories about them. I'm planning to start a masters in linguistics either this autumn or next year, and eventually I want to become a professor of linguistics.

CYCLING. Day-to-day, riding a bike is often my main means of transport, and I love travelling long distances by bike. I've only done one substantial trip so far: in 2012 I cycled roughly 500 miles from Hamburg to Prague along the river Elbe, over 10 days. I'd love to do that sort of thing more often, but it's difficult to find the time.

AND MUCH MORE.

Music, Movies, and Books

To name some favourite films: Withnail & I, Brazil, Submarine, The Double (Richard Ayoade is brilliant), Annie Hall, Love and Death (Woody Allen in general), Four Lions, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, 2001, most of Wes Anderson's films, There Will Be Blood, The Big Lebowski, The Life of Brian (I'm a big Monty Python fan), Pulp Fiction. I haven't seen many Russian films, but I loved Tarkovskii's Andrei Rublev. Also have a bit of a penchant for Kurosawa's samurai epics.

I tend to spend more time reading non-fiction, but a few of my favourite fiction writers are Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut, and Nikolai Gogol. At the moment I'm reading Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne. It's quite dense writing, so it's slow going, but I am enjoying it a lot.

My music tastes are very eclectic, I like a little bit of everything. I listen to a lot of stuff from the 60s, such as Jimi Hendix and The Velvet Underground. Lately I've gotten really into Tom Waits. Love classical as well.

I'm a big fan of The Wire, The Thick of It (and Armando Iannucci in general), Father Ted, Blackadder, PEEP SHOW, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, Arrested Development, Community, Black Mirror (and Charlie Brooker in general).
