About Me

I am a musician and ecologist, but I also feel pretty strongly that people's employment/work doesn't need to define them. I like good food and cooking, and I like to think about where food comes from, and learn about the ways that other people and other cultures relate to their food (and cook it). I care about being genuine, and kind, and respectful. I think music can form connections between people in incredible ways, and I'm always eager to have new musical experiences. I believe in respecting all people of different backgrounds, I am against patriarchy, against racism, and generally in favor of making people's lives better while also trying to improve the state of this planet as a whole. I can be a bit cynical, but I am also fairly idealistic, and if that seems like a contradiction I can explain more when I meet you =)

I'm travelling in France/Europe this winter with my partner, Sonya! You can see her profile here:

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I believe it's healthy to be generous, and that sharing living space reduces waste and makes travel more accessible to more people. I believe the value of travel is experiencing other cultures, languages, and people's personal histories.

Interests

I play fiddle (and banjo and a few other instruments), mostly trad and folk music of various kinds but I'm excited about lots of different kinds of music. I love to cook, and would be happy to cook you a meal or bake you something tasty while I'm staying with you! I spend a lot of time outdoors, for my work and for enjoyment. I enjoy hiking, camping, biking, fly fishing, and even when I'm at home I often prefer to sleep on the ground rather than on mattresses. I have done some work on small farms in Ireland, the U.S, and France - it's really meaningful labor and I have a lot of respect for farmers.

Music, Movies, and Books

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Catch 22, Intouchables, The Sound of Noise, The Gods Must Be Crazy

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've seen a small stream with thousands of wild salmon swimming up it, trying to find the places where they will spawn.

Teach, Learn, Share

I usually travel with my fiddle, so I can play you some tunes or sing you a song of you're into that sort of thing (or jam if you're a musician!). I like to cook, so if it makes sense I'm happy to cook you some tasty food while I'm staying with you or hosting you.
