One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Traveling around Timor Leste by bicycle... My gf, a German gambler named Mario, and I bought cheap mountain bikes from the father of a Timorean goddess, and cycled around the country on worn and pitted roads. For two weeks we biked around the south and east, navigating by migratory flight paths and an illustrated poster-sized map of 1970's era land of Lorosa'e. Beautiful, hospitable people were found everywhere. Our biggest fear, that of being overtaken by smiling, screaming hoards of children. They called us meleé, and they would help push laden bicycles up steep roads for candy. There were no temples, no waterfalls, no dive trips, but there were oases of cultural divergence fossilized in the ridges and valleys. In Timor there exists an occupation-era network of paved roads - now decrepit, overgrown ruins, but navigable nonetheless, and harboring free stories for those willing to ignore conservative warnings.

Copenhagen is the greatest city in the world, compared to Fort Lauderdale, FL, except when it's cold.
