About Me

ABOUT ME

I grew up in a not too large, not too small, post-industrial town on the coast of rural northern California. I idealized a world that had more culture and class, more history, more vibrant futures, and less depressed presents.

In recent years, I have instead come to question the class and history I sought, and the future that our dominant economy promises. I am interested in learning, or relearning, as the case may be, the nuances and complexities of the varied histories of place and people.

I am a geographer, and perhaps, as such, am predisposed to look closely at the physical landscapes which become the spaces of human interaction, the relationships between peoples and their landbases, economies, governance structures, cultures. I am a materialist, but not a capitalist, a lover of maps, but not of borders.

I am a person born, in my place, with certain privileges, that of whiteness, that of identifying, for the most part, with the gender I am assigned, that of having enough financial security to stay out of poverty and afford an education, that of having a mental state that isn't viewed as particularly threatening to those in power. In recognizing this privilege, I intend to work to be an ally in solidarity with those less privileged than myself.

PHILOSOPHY

Sheize....lets see...

“If the past has nothing to say to the present, history may go on sleeping undisturbed in the closet where the system keeps its old disguises.”
― Eduardo Galeano

....something like that...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have been an infrequent couchsurfer since 2008, and hosted folks via my mother in my hometown of Eureka, California while I lived and traveled in Europe. Most of the last several years I have been absent from the couchsurfing world, choosing to use workaway and/or wwoof for my adventures. However, I intend to reintegrate into the couchsurfing world more on this adventure.
