About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Retired and enjoying it, gay grandfather, tuba player, Ph.D. dropout mathematician, Myers-Briggs ENFP

ABOUT ME

One should know that I was a married father of two daughters who came out as a gay man in my early 40s and moved to DC when I separated from my wife. I have been a member of the gay community here in DC for over 25 years now, but also continue to have an active life with my family (now including two granddaughters!) and many straight friends.

PHILOSOPHY

One from Auntie Mame: "Live! Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!"

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Willing to host, presently. May eventually look to visit other hosts.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Have hosted a lot of folks here at my place near the National Zoo in DC over the past quarter century, but joined this Couchsurfing site. Had first guest actually join me 8/8/2013.

Interests

Haven't been particularly interested in team sports and reality TV, but otherwise pretty open to anything. Like meeting and chatting with folks, used to do triathlons in my 40s, played the tuba in a community band, like to travel, especially abroad. Finally in partial "recovery" from a rather libertine sex life!

Music, Movies, and Books

Tend to like "talky" movies as opposed to heavy action films.
Like lots of kinds of music, but especially classical stuff
Tend to read non-fiction (math, science, news, public affairs) more than fiction; don't read through enough books anymore, period--get mired on the Internet and in all my periodicals!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Following too many vodka toasts with a regional Governor, played the U.S. national anthem on a tuba offered by a brass band member at a fisherman's festival in Perm, Russia, in 2001, and managed to end up on Russian National TV--my 15 seconds of fame!

Teach, Learn, Share

Have a strong interest in rather abstract mathematics and statistics, especially in the foundations of the subject. Also interested in seeing the U.S. develop a truly rational, humane form of government, so I guess I'm still a bit of an idealist...
