About Me

(So you can ask me when you see me, a) Summarised life story:

I was born in the Summer of 1990, as an only child to a single mother. Growing up in Hull, Yorkshire there weren't many attractions for those who lived elsewhere and there weren't many prospects for people to stay there either. When I was 17 I joined the merchant navy to see the world and find something different, I still to this day don't know what I was looking for.

My time in the merchant navy involved lots of blue oceans, alcohol and a bit more ocean. I worked on container vessels and so I visited a lot of ports for a short time. Like any self-respecting seaman, I would spend my money almost faster than I made it resulting in a great tolerance for alcohol and a great inability to save adequately.

Once I lost that job to "outsourcing" I'd already found my home as being the world, my break up might have had something to do with that too. I turned to Asia to give me the answers to the questions I didn't know I was asking. I again did a lot of drinking but this time I wasn't on my own, I was learning to be a lot more social. My time at sea wasn't exactly a friend a minute situation but it did help me to communicate with non-English speakers, although my accent isn't exactly pure anymore. I visited many countries in S.E.A, met lots of fun and interesting people and saw some amazing environments and cultures.

My head was abuzz with new ideas and thinking in new ways, I totally misread the situation and joined University. I went back to Hull to study Chemistry, turns out I didn't really study any Chemistry and left university a year later. This time I ran away to Australia.

That's where I found "home" for the first time, in Melbourne. I made friends, I found love, I studied, got new hobbies and experimented with no experiences...apparently, LSD makes you a much better person, it definitely improved me as a person. I spent over 2 years hiking, partying and living a generally great life. If only visas were less complicated, we'd all get what we want (maybe! I don't know the economic impact of a social change such as that). I also grew a keen interest in Frank Zappa, techno and politics, I like to hear all points of view especially differing ones.

I've just spent over a year in Brunei on Borneo island helping with outdoor education at a school. It's an interesting place with beautiful jungles and mosques but the culture just isn't my cup of tea. It's either strict conservative Muslim or pointless binge drinking and I've changed my drinking habits a lot but I'm not really a conservative in many aspects either.

That leads me to the here and now...I'm going back to the UK on Sunday (24/07/18) as of writing this future best selling autobiography, who knows what's next.

...Hopefully South America and then Antartica, they're the last continents I have left to complete the set.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've met tons of CS users before that all recommended it. I've had my account for years but have never actually bitten the bullet to host or be hosted, although I have met people for coffee etc. to talk about the local area and what there is to do.

I do want to begin being hosted to one day be settled enough to host people in return. I think it's a wonderful idea, forum and community on CS.
