About Me

Hey, I'm Cameron and currently I live in French-speaking Canada teaching English in a high school. It's therefore quite obvious that I'm a keen linguist, traveller, and I love to see as much of the world, and meet the people in it, as possible! I grew up in Manchester in the UK, and then moved to Sheffield to study languages there, which gave me four of the best years of my life. I am really friendly, open, and more than happy to experience other people's lives that they wish to share, be it themselves or their environment around them.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on Couchsurfing because I feel that it is more than just a site to find a place to rest your head, you have much more chance to share in the hosts' lives and meet great new people who previously you might not have had the chance to encounter. It's basically 100x more personal than a hotel or hostel in my opinion, and as a people-person it suits me perfectly!

Interests

I enjoy outdoors activities a lot, such as hiking, sightseeing, open air ice-skating, and also I really like to experience as much culture as possible, for example museums, art galleries and theatre/music. I'm also a recent yoga convert and so far i can say it's one of gthe best activities I've ever started (I've just bought my first Gaiam mat and am slightly in love...) As well as these activities I love seeing the nightlife of various places (having lived in several different countries I've been lucky enough to see a whole range of nights out, from the sublime to the terrible!) Finally it's not an interest that I've pursued much but I would love to start taking more photographs/writing more about the places I visit.

Music, Movies, and Books

I genuinely love a whole range of music, from r'n'b and rap to folk to indie to rock. However a selection of my favourite artists are Oasis, The Manic Street Preachers, Ben Howard, Fleetwood Mac, old-school Arctic Monkeys, Banks, Lauren Hill, The Civil Wars, Ed Sheeran, Sia, The Beatles and Foxes.

Having recently rediscovered my love of reading for pleasure (after years of textbook 'reading' at university), I've read some great modern literature - I finished a book called Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel not too long ago and that really did impress me! However I'm a huge fan of the classics such as Dracula or Great Expectations, and modern writers such as Malorie Blackman and Dan Brown can definitely grip me with their works.

I love a lot of different movies in different contexts but my favourites would include Tarantino films (especially Jackie Brown), classic 70s/80s horror films (and probably modern ones as a guilty pleasure), and when I really feel like it anything with Jim Carrey can make me laugh like nobody can!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One amazing thing I've done would be that I was the first ever student from my university who both studied the course French with Luxembourg Studies and also went to spend a semester studying in Luxembourg alone. This made an impact on me because I was truly a fish out of water the whole time I was there but it inspired my love to see as much of the world as I can, and also hopefully gave future students the chance to find it a bit easier to settle down there if I can offer any advice possible.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would love to teach people about where I'm from, what I've seen on my travels and any interesting things I've seen so far in life (this is all dependent on them actually wanting to hear all of this, I wouldn't just ramble at them in an unsolicited way!)

I would hope to learn as much as I can what would be great to see/experience/share in whilst I'm staying in a particular place, as it would be only for a finite time therefore any advice would be fantastic, and any funny stories would always be appreciated.

Finally I'd like to share my love for travel, cooking, socialising, seeing the sights and if the moment called for it several beverages with any generous Couchsurfing host!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my experiences in life, my passions for travel, cooking, storytelling/listening, music tastes, diligent choredoing (if required) and finally a friendly demeanour at all times. I could also share any help in the languages I have learned for anyone wishing to practise them - be that French, English or Luxembourgish (brownie points if you've actually heard of this language!)
