About Me

Hi! I'm Christopher. I live and work in Fukui, Japan. I'm originally from the States, but I plan to spend the next years living, working, and studying abroad. After one more year in Japan, I would like to pursue graduate studies in international relations in Europe. It would be incredible to make new friends on Couchsurfing that I would be able to meet again in the near future!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on couch surfing because two of my closest friends, one in Austin, Texas and another in Takefu, Japan have been suggesting that I do it for a long time. I have had the chance to meet some of the people they have hosted, and everyone I met was always so friendly and eager to connect with their hosts. My friends have told be their couch surfing experiences--both as hosts and guests--have always been not only safe but rewarding. I would like to join the community and make some new friends of my own.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favorite movies include Inglorious Bastards, Blue is the Warmest Color, A Separation, Gone Girl, and Amores Perros.

My favorite books... hmm, I don't really have favorite books. I read a lot of non-fiction stuff. I'm currently reading A History of the Middle East (Mansfield), Inventing Japan (Buruma), and a collection of short stories by Julio Cortázar. My favorite periodicals are The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, and The New Yorker.

My favorite music... oh my gosh there is so much music that I am into. Jazz favorite are Arturo Sandoval, Axel Tosca Laugart, and Hiram Bullock; electroica favs are Eric Prydz and Deadmau5; 80s favs are Depeche Mode, Phil Collins, Toto... And of course I love all the top40 of my high school and college years!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

To be honest, I haven't done many amazing things. I graduated college a little fast... does that answer the question?

Teach, Learn, Share

I don't know how to answer this. Teach... I teach English to middle school students. Learn... I'm learning Japanese, studying for the GRE, and trying to study international relations in graduate school. Share... I share my beer when people visit me... but that's to be expected, hey? ;)

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my few but rich traveling experiences and my curiosity to learn and see more with hosts. Before living in Japan and living in close proximity to people from all over the world, I was really conservative about what I would try. Initially, I said no to invitations to mountain climb or ski or do Irish dancing. But over the course of my first year in Japan, I was convinced to try all of those things and more. This is to say, I bring an openness to accept the suggestions and guidance of my hosts. In turn, I hope we can talk about our mutual interests and hopes/dreams for the future together.
