One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Once, when I was hiking through the granite mountains leading into the High Sierra, the clouds had broken off into two distinct layers. One was above me in elevation, the other stretched out below me like a vast cotton carpet. As I reached a saddle between two peaks, the sun began to set through the lower set of clouds, and the colors of sunset refracted off the cumulus above and below as well as the polished surface of the silvery mountains, and all around me I was surrounded in a shifting prismatic display of rainbow color, like I was strolling through a kaleidoscope or into the Aurora Borealis.
