ABOUT ME

A joint profile for Caroline and Fergal (hence "Cargal"), written by Caroline. We both love travel (who'd have guessed?), nature and wildlife, food, wine, satirical comedy, films, current affairs, and in-depth political discussions with anyone mad enough to engage with a protestant from Northern Ireland and a Catholic from the Republic of Ireland. Both atheists now; very opinionated, but respectful of other people's beliefs, lifestyles and cultures. Most importantly of all, we love a good laugh!

PHILOSOPHY

Live and let live.

Interests

As in the profile plus I'm pretty obsessed with listening to BBC Radio 4/Radio 4 extra which are both talk only radio stations.

Music, Movies, and Books

When Fergal and I first met we went into a bookshop and bought a book which we thought the other should read. I bought Dostoyevsky's 'Crime and Punishment', which Fergal found so depressing that he couldn't finish; he bought me a cartoon book called 'Jimmy Corrigan, or, The Smartest Kid on Earth', which I equally struggled with. Saying that, we both love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas! We both dislike country and western music and love well written/directed films - way too many to list!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Working in Baghdad in 2004. Definitely an experience of a lifetime. For Fergal, well, meeting me obviously!

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm pretty talentless but could teach you how to ice-skate, use an apostrophe, or write your name in Arabic; Fergal could teach you how to talk in a silly Irish accent, or pretty much anything to do with a computer - he often shares that with me; again, and again, and again...

There's so much to learn, but if, on our travels, we could learn just a few sentences of each country's language, that would be an amazing start. Anything on top of that is a bonus.

What I Can Share with Hosts

We haven't yet surfed with anyone but hope we would be respectful guests, keen to learn about other people's cultures and to share our own.
