About Me

I'm finally making time in my life to travel and learn more about the world.

I always have at least one camera on my person at any given time and rarely is it a digital one.

My ability to accurately describe myself is not one of my better traits.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'd like to see more of the world than my budget can allow. :) I've been in Europe since the beginning of March and I want to keep the adventure going!

Interests

Photography of all sorts! I shoot instant photos, tintypes, large format, and everything else!

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a fan of Jazz, though I feel like I don't have that "deep appreciation" for it that most people who like Jazz have. Not yet, anyway.

Movies is harder to definite because I like a whole lot. If pressed to name my top 3 favorites, it would be: Pulp Fiction, Punch-Drunk Love, and... Lost In Translation.

The books I read are usually non-fiction and relate to the history of things that interest me, like Apple or early photographic techniques.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I attended a party at the Playboy Mansion. It was pretty awesome. They have rooms there that have mirrored walls and ceilings and there are mattresses under the floor so it's very soft.

Also, The Grotto is smaller than it looks in real life.

Teach, Learn, Share

In five minutes, I can show ANYBODY how to become a better photographer. There are really only a few things you need to know and they're incredibly easy.

First: if you're outside during the day and shooting photos of friends, position them with their back to the sun and turn your flash on. They'll have great rim-light on their shoulders and the flash will fill in any shadows on their faces

Second: get closer to your subject than you think you should. Don't just zoom in, actually move closer. There's a saying in photography: "if your photos aren't good enough, you aren't close enough". Get closer!

Third: Always strive have a subject in the foreground and the background. Landscape photos are great but they're almost always boring. Find some interesting thing to put in the foreground of your photo, even if it's just a tree or a car. They'll be that much better for it!

Happy to illustrate any of these points in person, and many more.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Website assistance. I design wordpress websites for clients and do basic tech support for them. If you're having computer problems, I can probably get to the bottom of it for you. Feel free to check out my work at www.Carletontorpin.com

And I love to cook, so I'm always happy to make a meal!
