Culture

- Time in Peru is approached in a very relaxed and flexible manner. Time is often referred to as “La Hora Peruana” or “Peruvian time”. So don’t be surprised if meetings or social activities begin late.

- Peruvians tend to belong to a hierarchical society where authority is expected to be respected, people are addressed as Mr. (Señor) or Mrs. (Señora) and then the last name. Some professionals are called by a title (Attorneys, Doctors, Engineers, Professors).

- Peruvians tend to belong to a collectivistic society, where people are more relationship-oriented than goal-oriented.

- Peruvians prefer to knit their private, social and professional lives together and don’t be surprised if they ask you things about your family or personal life which you may consider to be private.

- Initial introductions in Peru are informal. A handshake is the standard greeting. It is common to greet with a kiss on the cheek or a hug and should also be exchanged upon leaving. Men shake hands, women kiss cheeks, men kiss women’s cheeks.

- Don't be offended or surprised if your Peruvian friend is in your personal space. Peruvian use a closer physical proximity and physical contact as a way of communicating with one another.

- Public displays of affection are readily exhibited and highly encouraged. Couples walk hand in hand, arm in arm, nuzzling each other on street, on buses, in movie theaters, in parks and public spaces.

- Lima is the city of kings, not the kings of Spain!!!, the three kings (wise men) visiting the infant Jesus.

- Lima was inhabited more than 10,000 years ago!!! Cusco was inhabited from 9th century. Lima has 300+ archeological sites.

- The Top 4 districts of Lima are: Miraflores (Commercial district), Surco (Ecological district), San Isidro (Financial district), La Molina (Upper class district). Other popular districts are: El Cercado (Historical Center), Barranco (Bohemian district)

- Outside the city: Rupac (The Limeño Machu Picchu), Huancaya lakes, Austisha canon, Antioquia town, Casma beach, Marcahuasi plateau, Pachacamac Sanctuary, Lucumo mist hills.
