One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I spent six months Down Under with a friend we walked parts of the Heysen Trail in South Australia on the Feurieu Peninsula. We started in Cape Jervis and wanted to hike about 75km to Victor Harbor in five days. Doesn't sound too hard but we undervalued the weight of our stuff. We had our huge backpacks with all the stuff for half a year with us as well as food for five days and every day about six liters of water. Luckily we've been able to fill up our water bottles every morning as we spent the nights at campsites in Conservation Parks where they always had rainwater tanks. But one night we had to spend anywhere in the fields so we had to get along with six liters water for two days. The first of those two days we used about half of the water which worked quite well, however the second day turned out to be way more challenging. It had about 30-35°C and there was hardly shadow as we spent more than half of the day walking along sandy beaches which was additionally exhausting. As you might expect, we ran out of water! We both just wanted to sit down in the shadow, relax and drink water but we could not stop as we didn't know how far we still had to go till the next campsite where we also would get water. So we walked on along another beach and it felt like hours and hours to get to the other end of it. But it was worth the effort as there was a parking lot, a public earth closet and a RAINWATER TANK. We've been so happy the moment we had water again so we drank as much as we could and filled up our bottles. So we got back our motivation and enough power to walk along one last beach to reach the campsite for the following night.

This day I realized how happy I can actually be to have access to fluent water every day. It was a hard but also important experience which I would not want to miss.
