Music, Movies, and Books

I like books with a little bit of 'make-believe' or 'magic' that's not over the top ('Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' or 'The Blind Contessa's New Machine'). Speaking of magic, I also like when it's completely fantastical (LOTR). Speaking of fantastical, science fiction is also fun from time to time. I also like non-fiction books ("Half the Sky") and realistic fiction about places I have never been before to learn about an aspect of culture ('A Fine Balance') or have been before so the setting is familiar and I can empathize ('White Heat'). I also like dabbling into poetry. My favourite poems I have come across are "A Story that Could Be True" and "Cinnamon Peeler'. In general I like most all genres, and do lots of reading.

And the same general idea applies to movies. I like most every genre except thrasher-horror movies as my imagination will run wild and I'll have to sleep with the lights on for two nights. I love documentaries and animation. My favourite way to spend a hung-over Sunday morning is with a strawberry-banana smoothie and Planet Earth. I also really like foreign films, especially French foreign films because I'm trying to improve my French. Some good French movies are Jeux de Enfants and Paris Je T'aime.

Music? Music is the one thing that can instantly make me feel better. I have the same taste in music as I do food. I will eat and enjoy (or at least try to enjoy) almost anything, as long as it is genuine and of good quality.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Spending two weeks in Japan with my host families was amazing. Actually getting a glimse of what daily life is like in Japan was priceless. A lot was the same, and a lot was different. I brought my one family coasters as a gift but I hadn't realized that they didn't have coffee tables or a living room. Everyone just hung out in the kitchen. Getting to know the grandmother was really eye opening. She did not speak a word of English and my Japanese is not the best. We somehow communicated really well and she was nice enough to teach me how to do caligraphy and oragami. They were patient with me and taught me the traditional ways to bath, sleep, enter the family home, eat, and take pictures. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Here is the recipe for my favorite salad

Greek Salad

1 large cucumber
2 tomatoes
2 peppers (favorite colour- i like red)
1-1/2 onion (favorite colour- i like sweet white)
feta cheese- be liberal with the cheese!
virgin olive oil (enough to coat everything)
oregano
sea salt
coarse pepper

Cut all the vegetables up so that they are chunky. Add olive oil and mix the vegetables in it so they are evenly coated. Add the oregano, salt and pepper to taste. Add the feta cheese and stir everything in.
