About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Promote health care as a human right.

ABOUT ME

If you are a touring cyclist, please request here: https://www.warmshowers.org/user/74290

My background is in public health, and I am currently in my first year of nursing school. I work for a reproductive health center in Denver providing some clinical services alongside education and support. I moved here two years ago to complete a program called HealthCorps, doing homeless outreach through a community-based clinic on some of the meanest streets in the metro area.

PHILOSOPHY

"Never be afraid to ask; the worst someone can say is no."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Much of my activism and work in health care has been intertwined with travels and folks I've met through the Couch Surfing community. From research on disparities in health literacy, to access and women's health screenings, to work in rural, reservation communities, I've been moved and inspired through those I've hosted and stayed with along the way.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couch Surfing is great! My first experience with the site was back in '07 on a bicycle tour from Chicago to Los Angeles. Since, I've met many wonderful folks, but haven't been as active in the past year mostly due to a busy work schedule.

Interests

Bicycle advocacy, long distance bicycle touring, rural healthcare, community organizing, social activism, minority health, veganism, liberation medicine, urban homesteading, bicycle building, gardening, tea.

Music, Movies, and Books

Anything about The West, or women traveling; especially about women traveling in The West. Movies about landscapes and the people that inhabit them: Spaghetti Westerns. Bonnie and Clyde, Paper Moon, Badlands; Paris, Texas; Midnight Cowboy, Thelma and Louise, L.A. Story. High Fidelity. Music in that vein: Paul Simon, The Boss, Calexico, Wilco, Iron & Wine, Woodie and Arlo; Andrew Bird, Lhasa de Sela, Gillian Welch, The Shins, Pete Seeger, Gillian Welch, The Wailing Jennys, Joe Pug. Bluegrass, Folk, Chicago-style Jazz. Street musicians of every ilk.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Camping alone at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon
Weathering a forest fire on the PCH
Living at the foot of a National Monument with the NPS
Criss-crossing the country on my own, like it ain't no thing.
Attending a traditional temazcal in ABQ
Displaying my photography in my hometown ArtWalk
Founding a community bicycle collective
Keeping Noble Silence for ten days
Participating in an open heart surgery
Riding through the Nation Bison Range under the Harvest Moon
Working a clinic along the "Wickedest Street in America"

What I Can Share with Hosts

I've been serendipitiously blessed with a community of folks through couch surfing who, more than simply hosts, have also shared their philosophies, stories, and journeys with me. Influenced in part by those experiences, I am fortunately coming to a time in my life when I can offer some advice of my own to travelers who are searching for wisdom and insight. I'm happy to talk for hours about public health, bicycle touring, and the long, arduous process of applying to (and surviving) nursing school. Feel free to ask anything!
