About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To learn, explore, and be awesome.

ABOUT ME

I spent five years working in wilderness therapy for at-risk youth and whitewater raft guiding in the summers. They were the best jobs I've ever had and I'm in grad school now getting an MBA so I can open or take over a therapeutic program of my own and do what I can to continue to help kids figure themselves out.

I'm often boisterous and sassy, and occasionally crass. But I usually keep that in check when I'm meeting new people.

I love to learn and love intellectual conversations. I'm three classes short of having a second Bachelors in Philosophy and I love to hash out ideas and abstract concepts. I can usually hold my own in most debates, but have decided to do my best to never engage in one while drunk. Rational discourse goes out the window with the cork and discussions devolve into arguments about what the definition of is is. At those points I prefer to listen to or tell stories or utilize the effects of state determined retention and learn new drinking songs.

I love to eat and drink and whenever I go somewhere new I like to avoid the touristy crap and find a local bar/pub/restaurant and try something I can't get anywhere else.

PHILOSOPHY

It takes all kinds to make the world spin. Whatever people's differences, we're more alike than different, you just have to be patient and pay attention to the details if you're having problems. I like talking with people and helping them find commonalities.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Well I donated, and I'm starting to get into the local CS crowd in Atlanta.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I went on an impromptu road trip to Wisconsin to go to an experiential education conference and my buddy Dean organized for us to crash with a couple of CS hosts while we were there. I liked the idea and the folks I met so I decided to join in.

Interests

I like the outdoors, hiking, rock climbing, river sports, etc. I like drinking. Generally if it's alcoholic and it fits in my cup I'm a fan. I like to brew my own beer and make my own wine. It's a cheaper way to support my hobby. I like knowing things, and learning things. I love intellectual discourse. I was three classes away from a second Bachelors in Philosophy when I graduated college and ran out of money. I'd like to finish it at some point because I really feel like it's something that impacts my interactions with others and it'd just be a lot easier to say I had a degree than try to describe the convoluted situation that is my lack of a piece of paper.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like a lot of different movies. I'm a fan of sci-fi, off-beat comedies, quirky independent films, action movies, thought provoking films, absurd comedies, the list goes on.

I love music. The only music I don't like is music I consider to be whiny music. This often includes a lot of soft rock and soft jazz, a fair portion of modern country falls into this category as well although I like a lot of country. Just about every band I've heard that falls into the screamo genre grates my ears like a screaming toddler. My favorite genres are ska, punk, gypsy punk, jazz, swing, rockabilly, classical guitar, dubstep bluegrass, and folk, with a large assortment of alternative rock and independent artists including The Fratellis, Cake, and numerous others.

I have a love hate relationship with books. I love having the information in my head from books but the actual act of reading drives me up the wall. I'm reading a lot of business books for grad school. I like sci-fi, humor, other fiction, and things I can learn from. I've probably started ten or twenty books in the past 5 years and finished maybe half.
