About Me
Hi there! I'm winston chan, a graduate student major in ecology in beijing. I'm a passionate individual with a keen interest in reading and travel. I'm always open to new experiences and love exploring different cultures. I believe in the power of kindness and strive to treat everyone with respect. My favorite way to unwind is to travel and discover new places. I'm excited to connect with like-minded people and learn from their perspectives.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
"As someone who loves traveling and making new friends, I've found Couchsurfing to be the perfect platform for me.
Deeply experiencing local culture: Living with locals allows me to gain a deeper understanding of their way of life, eating habits, and cultural customs. It's much more authentic and interesting than staying in a hotel.
Making friends from all over the world: The Couchsurfing community is like a big family. I've met friends from different countries here. We share travel stories, try local foods, and even participate in local activities together.
Saving money and having fun: Accommodation is often the biggest expense when traveling. Couchsurfing allows me to stay for free, so I can spend more money on other fun things.
Improving language skills: Interacting with people from different countries is a great way to practice foreign languages.
Adding more fun to travel: Living with locals often brings unexpected surprises. For example, my hosts have taken me to hidden gems that only locals know about."

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Taking a six-month sabbatical to travel was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It allowed me to step back from my studies and gain a broader perspective on life. By living in different countries and meeting people from all walks of life, I was able to develop a greater appreciation for diversity and a deeper understanding of global issues. The experiences I had during my travels have had a lasting impact on my life, shaping my values and goals for the future.
What I Can Share with Hosts
As a couchsurfer, what can I share with my host?
Every time I meet a new host, I'm eager to chat with them and share our stories. I think the following topics can help us get to know each other better:
Home and culture: I'll talk to my host about my hometown, introducing some of the local customs, food, and attractions. I'll also ask them if they know anything about my hometown or if they have any questions.
Interests and hobbies: We'll chat about our common interests and hobbies, such as music, movies, books, and sports. Finding common ground can help us connect more quickly.
Travel experiences: I'll share my previous travel experiences with my host, telling them where I've been and the interesting people and things I've encountered. I'll also listen to their travel stories.
Work or studies: I'll briefly introduce my work or studies to give my host a better understanding of me. At the same time, I'll also express curiosity about their work or studies.
In addition to these, I'll also chat with my host about this trip:
Travel plans: I'll tell my host my destination for this trip, the planned length of stay, and what I want to do.
Reasons for travel: I'll share why I chose this place as my travel destination and my expectations for this trip.
Travel style: I'll tell my host whether I prefer adventurous or leisurely travel.
As a couchsurfer, I'll also express my gratitude to my host:
Gratitude: I'll thank my host for providing accommodation and express my anticipation for this exchange.
Offering help: I'll offer to help with housework or cook together to show my gratitude and respect.
Bringing a small gift: If I have the opportunity, I'll bring a small gift for my host to express my appreciation.
In addition to these, I'll also ask my host about local things:
Local food: I'll ask my host where I can eat authentic local food.
Tourist attractions: I'll ask my host to recommend some lesser-known tourist attractions.
Local events: I'll ask if there are any ongoing local events or festivals.
Language learning: I'll ask my host to teach me some simple local language.
Overall, sharing these things with my host can not only help us get to know each other better but also make my trip more enriching.
Most importantly, it's important to be sincere and open-minded, and I believe I can become good friends with my host.
