About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I have a theory of ethics which essentially attempts to bridge the gap between objectivism and relativism, to assess the theory I need to visit lots of places and talk to lots of people, oR maybe thats just an excuse for adventure, who cares!

ABOUT ME

Too stubborn to follow, too lazy to lead will almost definitely be the words inscribed on my epitaph. I have a deep discomfort with any kind of sense of real belonging, whether its being part of a political group, nation or even a gang. I tend to find the position of dissenter far to comfortable for my own good; individuals make me much happier than groups so I like to dedicate my attention to getting to know certain people very well rather than fitting into a gang.

Regardless I'm very laid back and am open to anything I haven't tried before that looks like it has a chance of being a good idea. This means I have a wide range of interests and I can come across as a bit scatter-brained when I get excited. I have a sentimental streak as well, within a lot of "grand adventures" I've embarked on, the most significant events are usually the smallest ones, 5 days in Croatia visiting 2 awesome cities and the thing I remember most vividly is standing on a hill in an olive orchard watching the sun set as the moon smiles behind me one warm evening.

Lastly, I have no immediate sense or normality, I usually don't realise I'm doing something weird until I stop and think about it. This may sound like it would cause problems but upon reflection it's meant I've done a lot of really cool things most people would feel too awkward to do; on my last night of my 2013 tour or Europe, feeling a sense of melancholic affection to the golden glow of the coastal town I was at I decided to sing Northwest Passage to the Adriatic Sea. I know now people walking past must have thought I was mad, but that's their problem, not mine.

PHILOSOPHY

The more you learn, the less you know, or the less you know you know. Life is gloriously complicated and we will probably never get anything completely right, but if you believe something there's usually a good reason for it. But people who believe otherwise usually have a good reason for believing the opposite. We should never believe we're done learning and when you're ready to sit quietly and listen you will always have the chance to grow and become better. The greatest wisdom can come from the strangest places. And no matter how good our ideas are, there's always a way to make them better, even if at times it can be difficult. To quote John Green, "Stupid truth, always avoiding simplicity".

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I go couch surfing usually with at least one other person with me. I also like to host as many people in York as I can.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've hosted about 9 travellers so far across the space of about a year, I plan to host many more. I also couchsurfed in Europe during a hitchhiking trip in August 2013 and plan to do the same in France this year.

Interests

I love the arts, having played guitar since I was 10 and having dabbled in various other instruments the best way to describe my passion for music is "I like to play WITH music" I love deconstructing the theory, composing pieces as well as listening and playing things. I also enjoy any kind of performance art and involve myself in theatre spoken word poetry, story telling and most of all singing, I will sing to myself a lot, I am not sorry.

"Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people" couldn't be more wrong. I love talking about people as much as events and ideas, not in a gossipy way, dissecting peoples minds is a fantastic thing to discuss especially if we really like them. Many a night me and My housemate Megan have stayed up way past bedtime figuring out how different and similar we both are to each other.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One time meand my friend Seb got lost in York on purpose so we could find places we've never seen before, we walked around until 4 am thinking about who sat by that canal in 1962 and who climbed this tree when the treaty of Versailles was being signed. Everywhere has history of lives lived that we will never know, little worlds begun and ended that have faded from memory that are just as significant as our own, and they are their own. The whole experience had a powerful transcendental feeling to it, you can get the same feeling by going into towns you've never visited and looking at the graveyard. Graveyards aren't grim at all, they are places where love is at it's strongest, where the memory of those people who we knew and loved, those worlds lived and experience are met with a fond farewell, a tear and a smile. Maybe one day someone will see a grave that says "Too stubborn to follow, too lazy to lead" and think the same thing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know more about palaeontology (dinosaurs and shiz), than anyone else I know, it's more of a curse than a blessing. But if you'd like to hear a 40 minute summary of the patterns of evolution since the dawn of life on earth, or hear some really cool facts about prehistory found out in the past 10 years then I'm your man.
