Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

Upping my travel time while locking my soul away in an academic cage for the next few years. You know, nothing big... just my last gasp of youth.

ABOUT ME

A Canadian in his late-20s looking to travel the world within his lifetime. I love history, especially Chinese history, great food, and traveling.

I am currently a doctoral student in History at the University of Toronto, Canada. I can either fascinate or bore you to death, whatever you're in the mood for.

PHILOSOPHY

- Life is too short.

- Perception is always key. Understanding does not have to mean agreement.

- Food is the glue of life.

- In Chinese, we have the words 聽 and 明白, meaning "to listen" and "to understand." Don't confuse the two.

- Oh, and peace, love, and all that jazz. Don't be a prick.

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Good question... guess how much participation I've done. ;) That's not to say I don't want to change that!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None on Couchsurfing.com, although I have hosted good friends of mine a couple of times before, as well as couchsurfed at their places. I guess that kind of counts?

I would like my first time couchsurfing with other people to be in a friendly setting. I am always down for meeting new people and cultures, and I'd love to share my experiences as a Canadian to you too!

Like how I ride a polar bear everyday from my igloo to my university made from ice whilst chugging a bottle of maple syrup and greeting passerbys with that first vowel of the alphabet. Always a fun time.

Intereses

We have already covered history (especially Chinese history), food, and traveling. Besides those...

- Hiking.
- Slacking (That doesn't really count, does it?).
- Skiing.
- Cooking (Nothing serious though).
- Trying new things.
- Learning about other cultures.

Música, películas y libros

When it comes to music, pretty much any genre will do, provided it's good. Mainstream pop? Sure. Classical? Cool. good ol' classic rock? Sign me up. Opera? La donna è mobile~!!! House/party/electronic/rave/trance music? I'm down. Alternative and foreign music? Again, provided it's good. Mandarin/Cantonese pop is pretty cool too.

Had a K-Pop phase, but that's pretty much dead now... except for IU. Man, she's good. Bruno Mars has awesome stuff. Oh, and definitely can't forget Michael Jackson.

As for movies... again, pretty much anything good.

Books? History stuff, sci-fi/fantasy/adventure, Lord Of The Rings because it merits its own special mention, and yeah, pretty much anything else.

Algo increíble que he hecho

I did some river tracing with a small group of friends when we were in Taiwan several years ago. We forayed into spots that were so pristine and undisturbed, it seemed as if they never saw human contact. It was definitely one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I am sure you would like to know whether I have anything to contribute when crashing on your couch for the night(s). I'm certainly no genie, but hey, I can provide the following:

- Someone to practice your English on, if you don't normally speak it. I am doing my doctoral degree in History. Proper English is ingrained in me. I can also help edit any written stuff in English that you have if you want.

- Cooking. I was born in Hong Kong but moved when I was one and a half. Still, I know a few Chinese dishes from that region, as well as some of my own twists on them. A culinary exchange would be great.

- Anything you want to know about Canada and its culture.

- By extension, recommendations on what to do and where you should go if you ever go there.

- History... if you want it. Ever been intrigued by history, but had no one to talk to about it? Or maybe you know someone with a history exam/essay that's due soon? Perhaps it's you. Well, here I am.
