About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to cycle around the world

ABOUT ME

I'm cycling around the world! It is a bit of a long story, but I've been travelling by bike since May 2010. I'm currently trying to get to Mori, China to complete a full circumnavigation by bicycle and boats. I don't use any other transport. I'm travelling with my girlfriend, Dea, these days. She is really nice, you should meet her.

I travel by bicycle for a number of reasons. Primarily it is because I find it to be the best way to travel - it enables me to fully observe and appreciate the world as I pass through it. I have experiences along the way that I simply could not have by other means of transport. I feel it is the best speed at which to travel, to see more, to experience more. My main objective by cycling the world is one of observation. I plan to do this for a number of years, seeing how people live in all parts of the world, seeing what it is that we are doing to the world, trying to understand and better appreciate my own place in the world. By the time I am done, I hope I will be in a position, by having a better understanding of it, to find a means by which to influence the world in a positive way.

PHILOSOPHY

You only live once and you have to make the most of it, so if you have a dream to do something, then you have to do it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Couchsurfing, I have found, is one of the best ways for me to observe how people live around the world. Being invited into peoples homes offers a unique perspective on different lifestyles. Best of all it shows how kind and generous people can be and the fundamental goodness of people. I love to talk with my hosts and to get to understand them a little, to gain an insight into their opinions on certain subjects.

I believe it is the people that I have met in the last seven years that have had the biggest impact upon me and my experiences and on the way that I think about the world. Those that I have met through couchsurfing have been some of the ones that have influenced me the most. I have made some great friends and I have learnt a lot.

Also, I think its important that Couchsurfing be recognised not as a glorified 'free hostel service.' I've met people who couchsurf because it saves them money because they often get fed, who arrive in the evening and leave the next morning. I don't like couchsurfing that way. I prefer to stay a couple of nights and got to know my hosts and I like to bring food and help at least cook one night or help some way if I can so let me know if you want help with anything or if I can cook for you.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have surfed a lot and hosted a bit. In the future I hope to host a lot!

Interests

I am interested in the world. I find entertainment in the little things which take me by surprise as I travel through this world. Nature continues to fascinate me. I am also becoming increasingly interested in finding ways to reduce the impact I have on the natural world.

ps, things to know about me: I'm vegetarian, and I NEVER EVER use cars (please don't expect me to) or other motorised transport over land!

Teach, Learn, Share

I dont know if I have anything to teach anyone, but I am happy to share the story of my lifestyle with anyone who is interested. I live and travel on a very small budget, based on living from a less materialistic viewpoint and focusing only on needs rather than wants. If you are interested in how to travel the world on almost no money, then I can at least tell you how I do it. Then it is up to you.
