About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Figuring what life is all about...

ABOUT ME

Met Dorothy (my wife) when, for one year attended Trinity College of Music in London. We have 3 children now more or less on their own.
Taught High School biology & physics for 28 years.
Now besides restoring an 1830 farmhouse, I do some volunteer things, travel, and so on. Enjoy outdoor activities, travel, wine & craft brews...
2012 Update: I am extremely disappointed to learn that CS has become a for-profit corporation. The plan to advertise, possibly charge for services (think make the founders very wealthy) is totally out of the spirit of what appealed to me about this organization. Not sure how much longer I will remain a part of this.... Note to potential surfers: I will only consider requests submitted via chrisinmaine at bewelcome.org

PHILOSOPHY

I am atheistic, (but enjoy debating theological issues). I tend to think that as humans we have very little self determination; rather we are like hapless pinballs in a machine whose direction and force are determined by bouncing off the influential folks we meet and the bumps of our environment. But all interacting with our unique innate genetic wiring. Sounds heavy! Sooner or later we will all disappear down the same hole; no heaven or hell. Alas, no God to bail you out... (Of course I may discover that I was way off-course in this philosophy.. ;-)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Considering we are located in a rural area we have been surprised and touched by hosting a number of folks and enjoyed trading stories and learning from all.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Mostly hosting but eager to do more surfing.
People are so different and interesting, and all the same in what matters.

Interests

Restoring a barn, energy conservation ( photo panels on roof) , most outdoor activities.... bicycling, skiing, kayaking, hiking, tennis and some music., a bit of writing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: usually classical- but enjoy all genres .
Films: Often foreign. Not a great fan of physical violence. I am always looking for another Waking Ned Devine movie. There is a stack of books by the bed which get chipped away at.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The adventure which still glows was walking the Camino in Spain. For me, it took quite a leap into the unknown to set out on this trek of 600 miles. But i needn't have worried. It was much like being a participant in the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer! You meet people from all over the world and exchange stories; share bread. And remember: I'm an atheist! Do it.

Teach, Learn, Share

Everyone has unique life experiences, so each can share a part of reality unknown to others.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom
