About Me

Hi, I'm Christoph, I'm 24 years old and study Japanese Studies (MA) and Linguistics (BA) at the University of Vienna! Languages are my biggest passion, with English being like a second native language to me. I've been studying Japanese for 5 years now and am not sure if I would consider myself fluent yet or not. 😅 I would also love to learn more Korean but am having a hard time finding time to study it lately. I've also been playing video games since a young age and especially like the competitive aspect of video games. Lately, I've especially been interested in competitive Super Smash Bros.! Other than learning languages and playing games, I quite enjoy reading (Dazai and Dostoevsky have been some of my favorites), watching movies, and exploring the many pubs and cafés of Vienna for new and interesting beers. Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions about myself!

My apartment is located on Laudongasse in what is arguably Vienna's most "hip" district, the 8th district, also known as Josefstadt. It's an extremely walkable area with good public transport and lots of nice restaurants, cafés, pubs and shops to explore. It also borders the 1st district, Vienna's city center, which is in walking distance. If you would like more information about the location, please let me know.

Note: I have just recently moved into a new apartment, so some things are still lacking, but we have all the necessities, so please don't worry about it. There's a couch for you to sleep on in the same room as I sleep, if that is okay with you!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I think that living with someone who is native to the country I want to visit is a much more enriching experience than simply staying at a hotel. I'd like to experience the culture of countries that I visit firsthand and want to be able to say that I've seen and experienced things that your average tourist typically doesn't get to experience.

Interests

I am quite introverted, so I often spend my evenings just staying home playing video games or reading a book. However, I also really enjoy exploring Vienna's many cafés and pubs, so I'm (almost) always down to try out something new, or take you to one of my favorite spots.

Music, Movies, and Books

In terms of music, I mostly listen to Hip-Hop/Rap and some more... experimental (?) music like hyperpop. If you're interested, these are my main playlists: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5UHIUlG1XOA30OfLeU34Iq?si=d20ac6d492b445e3 (Mixed)

I've gotten more into watching movies in the past 1-2 years. Some of my favorites are Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Nymphomaniac, Persona, Ikiru, and almost anything by Kore-eda and Sion Sono. Here's a link to my Letterboxd to see what I've watched: https://letterboxd.com/akura/

My reading taste is a little hard to describe I feel, I read mostly older/classical works, with some of my favorites coming from Dostoevsky, Sartre, and Dazai. I would also describe my political orientation as Marxist-Leninist, so I read a lot of Marxist literature, or at least try to. One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I don't think I do too much crazy stuff, my favorite memories are probably from travelling through Japan using Couchsurfing and hitch hiking, as well as touring Tōhoku in the winter.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm not sure I'm a good teacher or have any interesting skills to teach, but I'm willing to share anything I know about languages, Japan, and of course Vienna or Austria in general!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am always happy to share knowledge about European culture, languages, lifestyle, cuisine and answer any other questions that might arise relating to my home country or any of the other countries I have visited or know something about!
