COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My favorite way to travel has always been to go somewhere and stay put for at least a few days so I can meet locals and experience some "regular life" in that area. When I was attending conferences or indulging my travel bug while working for nonprofits and other lower-paying jobs over the years I, of course, came to rely on couch surfing to be able to afford the trips - but the truth is I prefer being able to stay with locals whenever I can.

The swing dance community has a tradition called "exchanges" where we visit each others' cities to dance and I've been a host and a guest since the first exchange (1998?).

I'd say my most memorable couchsurfing experiences outside the U.S. happened in the Philippines. More than once I would travel to various towns by bus and was invited to join people for a meal or they offered to show me around the town and sometimes even invited me to stay in their homes. It's always an honor to get such an offer.

Partner dancing of all kinds, but primarily lindy hop and tango. Hiking, rock climbing, camping, spelunking. Museums and architecture. Cooking & trying different kinds of food. Watching performances of live music, dancing, theater.
