About Me

CURRENT MISSION

mission? I'm not a crusader!

ABOUT ME

Feel like defining personality is difficult, we are all introverts, comedians, environmentalists, and bastards when the mood takes us. So I don't like trying to pidgeonole my complex, mulit-faceted persona into a descriptive box.

I spent alot of my early 20's post uni living the easy life (working part-time, growing vegies... generally taking it easy) but eventually got frustrated with the lack of purpose and income that come with it. But it was still a fun way to live for a while :)

A bit later I tried my hand at comedy- there was some success but failure by the bucketload!!! So it was time find a career... somehow took the path of accounting which has worked out pretty well. Currently an Analyst for the government.

My long term objectives from life.
Learn French (fluently)
Do something even mildly creative
Live in Amsterdam/Lyon/Corsica
Set up a windfarm in either the Pacific or Victorian hinterland.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

As a young travellor in Canada (19) I realised that most of my memorable experiences are the people I met through various random encounters (mainly hitching)- more so than the touristy sites and skifields. So I hope to have some more people experiences in my future travels rather than just postcards and hotels.

I am deeply indebted to the travelling community who have shown me much unconditional kindness which I hope to repay!

Your couch-request does not need to be a beautiful work of poetry to get me to host you. As long as it at least says 'Dear Hamish' that is a good start! The two biggest things for me are... does the timing suit me personally, and have you actually done some hosting yourself. Because the biggest problem with CS is that surfers outnumber hosts 10 to 1. So if you have done *some* hosting that will work in your favour for sure. :)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Have met some great people, Michel, the Chris's, Sian, Maisie... have all been good. Haven't done a great deal of hosting, but trying to improve there!

Interests

Football (though we call it soccer in Aus) I love the game, but I'm pretty crap!
Cards, love the cards- poker, 500, whatever I can force people ito playing!
Live Comedy, music
Musically: I am always 5 years behind the trend - but I can introduce you to some good Aussie music which never made it overseas (Pre-sets, Gerling, Butterfingers, Bamboos)

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies, 28 days later, District 13, Wristcutters, Star Wars trilogy. Anything by Mike Judge & Kevin Smith, Simon Pegg

Books, *some* Iain Banks, Asimov, "Yes Man" "Jitterbug Perfume", "Sky & the Forrest", "Fraction of the Whole" and the Melway.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sitting broke, unshaven, and generally "hobo-esque" in a roadhouse in Canada at 2am. Freezing, nowhere to stay. And a local offered me a place to stay for the night, cooked me pancakes, and gave me a lift back to the highway the next day. Still cannot believe how nice a gesture that was to a complete stranger.
& on a more self-indulgent note...
Tripping in a coffee shop in Amsterdam listening to The Doors. [Has to be one of my highlights].

Teach, Learn, Share

Random encounters with strangers are awesome. I think people who are free and uninhibited enough to approach strangers are equally awesome. Unless they are asking for money or cigarettes, in which case they are scum.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, Laos, Latvia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Slovenia, Thailand

Countries I’ve Lived In

Australia, Canada, France
