About Me

Hi! My name is Colm. I love travelling, seeing new cultures, reading, writing, going to gigs, making new friends, drinking and staying up all night having good chats with interesting people.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm going to be travelling around Europe over the next few months and would love to meet some locals in the places I visit to get a real taste of the lifestyle (beyond all the tourist stuff).

Interests

Music, Cinema, Literature, Performance Poetry, Writing, Journalism, arguing about politics with people who have the exact opposite views as me and then holding truce over a beer, retreating to the mountains and camping, eastern philosophy (Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism), cooking, painting, travel.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, William Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, Leo Tolstoy, Ernest Hemingway, Will Self, Sylvia Plath.

Music: folk, alternative/indie, blues, rock music, hip-hop, weird bits and bobs from around.

Movies: The Third Man, Dog Day Afternoon, Deer Hunter, The Killing Fields, Kubrick, Tarantino, Orson Welles, the original Star Wars films and (nearly) everything Woody Allen has ever produced.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I visited India in 2012 with one of my best friends. While there we went to Bombay, Kolhapur, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Deradhun (which is way up in the north). We had the good fortune to get to meet members of the Gandhi family, to visit beautiful Jain and Hindu temples, to visit places where Mahatma Gandhi lived (and the spot where he was killed), to ride trains overnight through the Indian countryside and to get to travel alongside a really cool bunch of American students, academics and documentary makers (also a poet, a charity founder and a nun, for variety :P).

I haven't really traveled since then, so this September I'll be taking the same friend around Europe and looking for more adventures.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can play guitar and Ukulele and I love to learn and share songs with others. I also love writing and love to see the world and learn the stories of others so I can write them down. I also speak the Irish language (Gaeilge), and I would love to teach phrases from this to people who have never heard it before.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can cook you a really nice curry in return for a place to sleep! Or maybe some traditional Irish food? My curry is delicious though, so I recommend that.

Ideally I would love to meet a host I can share with, whether this be by some lively discussion or by actively seeing the country together is up to you but would be much appreciated. I offer you my company, stories and probably some little gifts too.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Scotland, Slovakia, United States, Wales
