About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To see, do and experience as much as i possibly can!

ABOUT ME

Hello! I have recently started a PhD here in Cambridge in Atmospheric Chemistry - which seems awesome so far. I grew up on a small island on the Northwest coast of Scotland - the Isle of Skye - absolutely fantastic place! In my undergraduate I spent a year in the States and it was absolutely fantastic, graduated, travelled a bit, moved to Switzerland for 5 months, then went for 2 months to Oman, then worked on St Kilda, then lived at home in a cupboard in a caravan and worked in a pub, then went to Japan, then worked on St Kilda again and I am currently at King's College in Cambridge, but living in a private house. First two months of PhD were spent in Borneo which was very exciting indeed!

PHILOSOPHY

"...I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore."

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have surfed quite a bit now! I have also hosted quite a bit now! If you give me a bell I'll see what I can arrange, though it might just be a wee explore around the city!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Had awesome CS-Surfing experiences in Bermuda and Washington DC, and recently i've been hosting surfers in Edinburgh! Which has been great! New Year in particular was awesome fun - 15 people all at once! Utter madness. Also surfed and had awesome experiences in Greece, Macedonia and Cyprus. I feel pretty involved in this whole thing now. Not been to any events yet, but that's the next step!

Interests

I enjoy the outdoors - kayaking, sailing, hiking etc which is the best it can be on the Isle of Skye. I also really enjoy caving and skiing. I also like my music and enjoy playing the guitar. Also I enjoy having a good time and a good laugh! I'm one of those people who just likes everything and does everything - so generally open to anything really. Travel and meeting people obviously interests me greatly to - i'm hoping to do more of this in the future!

Music, Movies, and Books

List of music in very long - The Beatles, R.E.M, Oasis, Stone Roses, Talking Heads, The Cat Empire, Flaming Lips, Elliott Smith, Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Arcade Fire, Runrig, Guillemots - some of my favourite bands. Also like Beck, Laura Marling, Gotye, Air and heaps more of many varied genres
Getting more into films these days - Shawshank Redemption, Lord of the Rings, American Beauty, The Beach, Groundhog Day, Disney Films obviously, Into The Wild, Donnie Darko, Fargo - and most of the others i've watched recently.
Books - again, an endless list, recently read Day of the Triffids, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and all the books by Gavin Maxwell - all terrific reads. Enjoy books about Scotland and travelling.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Its really hard to pick one thing.
But here's one:
Sleeping on a cliff ledge on the remote St Kilda archipelago among millions of puffins and rare Manx Shearwater birds making strange alien noises. Watching the sun go down over the endless Atlantic as a whale breaches down below the cliffs. We also had a wee fire and roasted some marshmallows that I had made myself. That was pretty special.

Teach, Learn, Share

Want to become proficient in a new language - SPANISH!

Pretty cool learning about other countries and ways and opinions. In the last few years my food experiences has rocketed - so i want to keep that going!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my knowledge of whatever I know? Can tell people about my science (atmospheric composition) or about where I'm from (Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands).

Happy to help with folks' English too.

Can also cook for folk I guess? I can't make anything too exciting, but I quite enjoy having a shot!

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Bermuda, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Panama, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey

Countries I’ve Lived In
