I'm a pretty quiet person. I spend a lot of time these days on my bike exploring back roads seeking out swimming holes, vineyards and farms. When I'm not doing that I like to play piano, read and write - my favourite subjects mostly being in the area of science and philosophy. I also love to cook so there is usually tasty food to be had here. There is brown bread rising in the kitchen even as I type this.

For the past few years I've lived in homes that hosted travellers from couchsurfing.org and elsewhere. I very much enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and share my home so now that I have a home of my own I would like to continue doing so. In the past my roommates would often throw parties, not just for the surfers at our house but for all those in the neighbourhood. While I enjoyed them well enough I personally tend to favour quieter activities. When I lived in St. John's my favourite had been bringing our surfers to trivia night at a local pub; the diversity of our groups gave us a definite edge and so we often ended up winning our bar tab. Now that I'm out of the city I mostly look forward to being able to share local scenery, places to swim, bike trails, vineyards and farmer's markets.

I don't read much fiction these days however Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett are still two of my all-time favourite authors. My favourite subjects tend to be in the areas of science and/or philosophy. I enjoy reading both lighter pop material (Pale Blue Dot, Silent Spring, The Selfish Gene, Elegant Universe, Flat/Flatterland etc) as well more technical or academic works.

As for television, I am a huge Dr Who nerd. I also love everything I've seen by Joss Whedon, likewise with Derren Brown. My favourite shows tend to be about clever people being clever (The Bletchley Circle, Sherlock, The Newsroom, House of Cards, etc).

I once narrowly escaped certain(ish) death kayaking through a narrow crevice. Just as I was exiting a massive wave hit and the crevice behind me filled with a tower of waves, froth and foam. I like to imagine my escape looking like something from Indiana Jones except damper and less boulder-y.

My apartment has become overrun with musical instruments which I'd be more than happy to share. There's a cello, flute, violin, piano and guitar. The piano and the guitar are the only ones I'm any good at so I may not be the best teacher, but so long as folks are kind to them they are welcome to play.
