One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I think the most amazing experiences in my life have been times when I've had a personal experience with someone whose culture is dramatically different from mine. When I was living in Mexico, I was once touring a remote city that had been covered in lava from a volcano 50 years ago. A group of us Americans were being led by a group of Purepecha indians, one of the few groups in the region that weren't decimated by the Spaniards. I slipped and fell on the lava and cut one hand very badly. We were 45 min walk from any road and about 2 hrs from medical care of any kind. A 9 yr old Purepecha boy offered to carry my things and walk me back to the bus. The 45 minute conversation with this boy, whose life was so different from mine, is still very fresh in my mind even though it was 10 years ago. He was very curious about me, had questions about what snow was like, what my school was like and what my family was like. He told me all about his, too. It was one of those moments that made me feel glad to be alive. To remember that despite any differences in culture, human beings are basically the same, all over the planet.
