About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Remove the "fledgling" from my occupation

ABOUT ME

I've been called pretentious, pedantic, knowledgeable, intelligent, wise, ridiculous, verbose, shy, judgmental, loving, sarcastic, genuine, arrogant, humble... As far as I can tell, these are all true things.

Mostly, I like Good Things, and try to understanding what is or is not good about something.

PHILOSOPHY

I try to not let "the real world" get in the way of that reality which transcends the tangible. If everyone had the courage to do what they actually wanted, the world would be a nicer place.

And it would be nicer still if people would realize that everyone thinks and feels in a different way; and this doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. (But it doesn't mean they're not, either).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

This is always such a hard question to answer... how does anyone participate in any community?
Couch surfing is really just a large family; I try to make everyone I meet feel like they're a part of my family. :)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couch surfed with Bas and Josh in Den Haag (July 09). Late nights; great times, and homemade sushi.

Wien (August 09) Food, African music, and infinities with Moe and Gela; Weltcafe, library, and "hooker boot shopping" with Sophia.

All over Belgium (Jan 2010) cooking, good beer, talks about everything, wandering and way too many cigarettes.

So much hosting in chicago...

And a few trips back to visit friends in Wien and Den Haag.

Interests

Books of various sorts (especially old, well-bound books, math books and really good literature), abstract math, coffee&tea, good beer/wine/whiskey/cocktails, music, computers, rock climbing, linguistics (especially etymologies), bikes, (almost) anything strange or esoteric.

Music, Movies, and Books

Once, I tried to list things here. I was never satisfied, so let's try this:
2 Authors: Jorge Luis Borges, Dostoevsky
3 poets: Rumi, T.S. Eliot, Sarah Kay
1 band: mewithoutYou
2 movies: Primer, Snatch

In no way complete, but those all rattle around my brain incessantly.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

First thing that comes to mind is "the Cathedral". It's a climbing place in southwestern Utah, set on the north face of a huge rock in an incredibly picturesque location. Why the name? A tall (40+ meter) wall with 3 little arched domes that look like the naval of a Cathedral. Incredible (and difficult) climbing, and a beautiful location.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can share: Some thoughts on faith, a bit about math (and what mathematicians do), a bit about computers, a bit about audio equipment, a bit about coffee, and random things on random subjects.

I'm willing to learn anything from someone who is passionate about it.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, United States
