I'm 32 years old. When I was 27 I quit my job of 7 years working in homeless shelters to move to Freiburg, Germany to study. I have good knowledge and training in mental health and substance misuse, and I write fiction stories and screenplays which often include themes in those areas.

I enjoy travelling, and usually stay in hostels where I can meet people and make friends. Cooking for people, and learning about local foods, drinks and cultures is really important to me. I think it's always fun to learn new things about the world, and to teach what you know.

I'm pretty quiet and chill, but social, easy to talk to, and like to party. So I could be a guest you hardly notice, or we can hang out and party. I'm happy to go with whatever works.

In December 2019 I travelled to South America to begin an adventure that was beautiful, but cut short by the Coronavirus. I will continue that adventure one day.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like to be on the move, and to travel the world and learn about other cultures and the way people live and have fun in other cities. There's so much to do and see, I want to make the most of the opportunities available, and couch-surfing is one of the oldest and best ways to explore the world and meet cool people. Why wouldn't you take advantage of a good opportunity when it arises?

Interests

I'm a writer first, focusing on magical realism and reading Murakami, Marquez, Kafka, Saramago etc. I write short stories, screenplays, and I'm exploring translation work. I sometimes do freelance proofreading work.

I'm also a big film fan, which was helped by living with a filmmaker for 3 years. I am addicted to Netflix and Mubi.

I'm not very sporty, but I love to walk and go on long hikes in the forest or up mountains. I enjoy being outdoors, especially when the weather is good. I recently learned to swim.

I also like a good wine, or a cheap one. I only like the good whisky.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - I'm listening to a lot of Argentinian music right now. Mercedes Sosa, Juana Molina, Tonolec, Kevin Johansen, Sui Generis. I'm also into Abba, Solange Knowles, Khalid, Britney Spears, and Ginger Minj. I grew up listening to Motown with my mother. My father got me to love Bob Dylan. My uncle taught me to love Bob Marley. My best friend introduced me to M83 and Bon Iver. I discovered Devendra Banhart and Billy Joel all by myself. Music is everything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I took part in a clinical research trial in India, in which I was the guinea pig testing a medication that helps to combat common bacterias found in unsanitary water.

I spent 9 days in Southern Chilean Patagonia hiking the O-circuit of Torres del Paine with a man I met two weeks earlier.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a qualified adult teacher/trainer, and have experience teaching creative writing, spoken word poetry performance, and some experience teaching english as a foreign language. I also enjoy learning about literature, art, music and films, and discussing these things with like-minded people. I'm open-minded to new experiences and cultures, and like to share my experiences and things I've learned.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I enjoy cooking and will offer to make food for you (meat, vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free - I am educated on dietary needs). I'm also happy to help with learning the English language, and I would like to share house-keeping chores.

I can also share my company - it's quite good.
