About Me

I'm an extroverted nerd: I've studied different degrees ranging from Systems Engineering to Applied Maths to Astrophysics, and landed on a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, which I finished in Belgium. Currently I am a post-doctoral researcher and lecturer in Belgium and UK.

I've lived short and long term in Mexico, Guatemala, Italy, Canada, China, England and Belgium in the last 12 years of my life. At these countries I've either coursed an entire university degree or did a research stay. I lived in Harbin, China from 2014-2016, which marked an inflection point in my life. Since 2016 I am based in the wonderful city of Leuven, in Belgium.

My goal in life is very simple: to be happy. That entails working doing what I'm passionate about, and lots of traveling, learning and exploring. Meeting new people with different mindsets, backgrounds and core beliefs, with always valuing close family and friends. Our planet is so rich and heterogeneous in biodiversity, and it has been my goal to scrutinize it, including the infinite space beyond our little pale blue dot.

My days go by between good cups coffee, large amounts of thinking time, writing computer code, developing some mathematical framework, reading scientific papers and teaching. At night, I turn into an avid beer drinker and party devotee. Concerts, parties, festivals and fun events in general are indispensable in my life.

I want to meet you. It could be for a quick chat over coffee or a drink, or for a deep existential conversation, or for a mind-blowing night out somewhere in the world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In 2012 I backpacked solo for 3 months without really knowing about this website. I started staying at friends of friends couches, until I was formally captivated by the concept. In general, all my CS experiences have been amazing!!!!

Interests

Astronomy, reading, music, hiking, nature, the ocean, philosophy, math, science, physics, dreams, music... Always in the mood for: sushi, beer, coffee and chocolate.

I try my best to (properly) visit and explore at least one new country every year!

I like languages very much (including the programming ones). Throughout the last few years, I have been learning Russian and Chinese, now in Belgium some Dutch. I am a chess and billiard enthusiast, but also enjoy very much basketball, football, cycling, ping pong, hiking and camping.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: Philosophy, science, universe, death, biographies, or simply a good novel.
Music: Anything ranging from classical to metal to latinamerican to punk.
Movies: Seven, Martyrs, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, V for Vendetta, Trainspotting, A Clockwork Orange, Memento. Pretty much anything that would make me think, introspect and/or laugh.
T.V.: Friends, Breaking Bad, Black Mirror, La Casa de Papel, Sons of Anarchy; Love, Death + Robots.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Live in China for two years!
- Go stargazing on meteor showers (seen over 200 in one night!)
- Lived in the Papal Gardens for several weeks (where the Vatican Astrophysics Observatory is). Met the Pope in person.
- Showed to dozens of people Saturn and its rings through a telescope.

Teach, Learn, Share

I teach... but I rather learn. Learning is one of my favorite things to do. I like sharing my perception of life, listening other perceptions of life and discussing different points of view.

I am very fond of my mother tongue and have tried to study it deeply. I would be thrilled to teach you some Spanish.

I also really like cooking and food in general: Latinamerican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Russian and certainly Chinese, particularly from the north. I can also practice/teach some ping pong, I trained for several years but now I just enjoy playing it.

I am an enthusiastic astronomer, have always been. THE UNIVERSE IS SIMPLY FASCINATING, LET'S GO STARGAZING!
