Sobre Mim

CURRENT MISSION

I help people connect and cross boundaries of all kinds; very focused on business right now but deeply philosophical

ABOUT ME

When applying for undergrad, was shocked to realize, when answering the app's wacky question: "describe the houses you've lived in," that I'd lived in 15 houses (I was 18 at the time). I've lived and worked in France, Italy, West Berlin, Czechoslovakia (then), England and the U.S. Traveled extensively in Europe and the U.S. Very interested in Asia. In Chicago, have been involved with international orgs like Le Groupe Professionnel Francophone, Council on Foreign Relations, International Visitors Center, the Alliance Française. I'm a family man and very focused on my profession right now.

With this background, it should come as no surprise that I'm a management consultant ,^) For 20 years, I've helped market challengers (startups) and market leaders (big orgs) use disruptive technology to grab or maintain the advantage. Since early 2006, I've specialized in social networks, and I speak and work worldwide. I've had leading roles at global consultancies, and I've worked independently as I am now. My unique talent is abstract thinking and creating innovative logical tools and approaches that help risk averse organizations to adopt disruptive tech and processes because I focus on managing the risk of adoption. I write a lot and have many blogs, twitter streams, etc. Here's a sampling:

PHILOSOPHY

Exchange of everything, sharing. Conversations are collaborative sculpting.

Por que estou no Couchsurfing?

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In the business world, I'm known as a connector, I tweet in several languages. Therefore, I see couchsurfing as another way to connect when I travel, a way to exchange something, depending on the circumstances. I have a small place right now and am not set up to host, but I hope to change that at some point. I will do coffee and help you get connected with awesome people, places and things to do.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Beginner, although I've traveled extensively and hosted and been hosted extensively, although not through couchsurfing

Interesses

Semiotics, redefining capitalism (I believe in rewarding individual drive and new practical thinking, but I believe that we humans have outgrown the exploitative nature of capitalism, and that the survival of the Earth depends on our realizing that and conducting ourselves more collaboratively and generously), reducing waste and environmental impact, the significance of the Knowledge Economy and global p2p (peer to peer). Running (did the 2005 Chicago Half Marathon) and cycling. La culture française. India, Nigeria, Japan, Russia, Brasil, Canada...

Uma Coisa Incrível que Eu Fiz

This may seem banal because so common, but it's a universe.. being a father.

One formative experience was attending the 1977 London International Youth Science Fortnight (LIYSF) in which I spent two weeks with delegates from 26 nations; I felt very natural in that setting, which was a key reason I've since pursued international opportunities.

Another thing I did and can't believe now because it was so reckless: in 1984, repelled a cliff north of the Youth Hostel at Sagres, with no equipment or companion, to sleep halfway down the cliff overnight.

Ensine, Aprenda, Compartilhe

TEACH: I am in the forefront of advising firms, government and people how to discover, build and maintain relationships online for mostly business purposes but can be applied to any. I have rare practical and theoretical knowledge of the major platforms: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube as well as blogging, websites and how this integrates with offline activity. I have extensive experience with marketing and business strategy for large and small firms as well as career management consulting. Whatever your life goals, I can share concrete ideas about how to use social networks to achieve them faster: new job, new company, new studies... In my 20s, I was a chef and opened Italian and French-inspired restaurants, and I love sharing with food and cooking for my hosts. I'm a decent player of several strategy-oriented (offline) games: bridge, chess, backgammon. Can teach the languages I know; have been an editor...
LEARN: I'm very interested in emerging cultural, social and business trends. Blonsky's American Mythologies made a huge impression, and I see the world this way, including social networks. I'm painfully ignorant of most of the world, having grown up in a Western-dominated world. I'm very curious about Asia and want to work there. Also South America and Africa.
SHARE: I perceive Couchsurfing as an opportunity to share, exchange, things I know and things you know. Also to ponder. I love brainstorming and philosophizing.
