About Me
CURRENT MISSION
All that is gold does not glitter, not all who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. - J.R.R Tolkien -
ABOUT ME
Living & loving Wellington & New Zealand! I love meeting new people and being exposed to different cultures - thus I joined couchsurfing.org. I haven't done as much traveling as I would have liked, but it is definitely something that I'm working towards. But in the meantime, I expose myself to other parts of the world through people from other parts of the world and through books! I have a diverse range of interests but literature tops the list. I find good and witty conversations really enjoyable. I am heavily political and deeply passionate about environmental and social justice issues. I value my faith but I am liberal. I am heavily philosophical - while I prefer certain values and ideologies over others, I do try to understand opposing views in order to help me truly value pluralistic societies. I do not enjoy being put into fixed categories or being stereotyped because of my race, culture, background or faith. Racism is my biggest enemy. Human beings are far more complicated than stereotypes. On a lighter note, I like science fiction shows / movies :)I am Malaysian but I:- do not enjoy durian. Not even a single bit.- cannot tolerate anything above "medium spicy" in food.- do not say "lah" at the end of every sentence.- much prefer beaches to shopping malls.- am not very good at bargaining for low prices.- still do not have a viable solution on dealing with mosquitoes.I live in New Zealand but I:- don't really concern myself with rugby.- do not understand cricket.- do not live among sheeps or cows.- have been to a farm only once.- have never watched Outrageous Fortune or Shortland Street (apparently the epitome of Kiwi soap opera)- do not say "aye" at the end of every sentence.- have nothing against Australians.- am still missing the 24/7 crowds and buzz in Asia, even after 6 long years of living here :)
PHILOSOPHY
"Die letzte verantwortliche Frage ist nicht, wie ich mich heroisch aus der Affäre ziehe, sondern (wie) eine kommende Generation weiterleben soll. Nur aus dieser geschichtlich verantwortlichen Frage können fruchtbare - wenn auch vorübergehend sehr demütigende - Lösungen entstehen" - Dietrich BonhoefferTranslation:"The ultimate question for a responsible man to ask is not how he is to extricate himself heroically from the affair, but how the coming generation is to live. It is only from this question, with its responsibility towards history, that fruitful solutions can come"."Zwei Dinge erfüllen das Gemüt mit immer neuer und zunehmender Bewunderung und Erhfurcht, je öfter und anhaltender sich das Nadenken damit beschäftigt: der bestirnte Himmel über mir, und das moralische Gesetzt in mir." - Immanuel Kant.Translation:Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.
