You should only travel to Italy if you have cash money in your wallet, there are no free rides here.
From my place to Venice is about 1 hour on the vaporetto including a 15 minute bus ride or bike ride.

Latest planned arrival time to venice airport is about 6pm, due to flights delays and bus connections.
Also the cost of a 75 minute vaporetto ticket for tourists is 9,50, so to get to this island from venice and back is the same cost as a hostel in mestre for a night.

To have some meaningful interaction a stay of several days or more is best. My time is valuable since I do a lot of outdoor endurance training even if it is cold.
