About Me

Hello!! My name is Dan, 22, from Massachusetts in the USA, went to school at Hamilton College in New York, and I’m coming to Cork! I'm traveling in hopes of connecting with my family's country of origin in a very personal and immersive way. I am very energetic and personable and I definitely thrive when surrounded by new people and am energized by stimulating and challenging work environments, so I figured throwing myself in would suit me!

I love music of all sorts and if I’m not listening to it I’m probably talking about it, I sing and can noodle on guitar and keyboard but would certainly like to get better, and I love sport. I grew up playing soccer as a keeper and still follow it today. Though I won’t pretend to know half as much as any of my hosts about the game! I'm also an avid hiker and love to be in nature. I would have to say canoeing is probably my actually favorite way to be outside but it can be hard to find a lake and boat all the time! I'm starting to get into cycling a bit recently and hope Ireland's hills might be a place that passion comes alive. And lastly, I'm a Gemini! Less so in the two-facedness and more so in my general curiosity, if that helps some!

In short, I'm looking for an adventure! I can offer help in threefold kind to the hospitality you show me. And so, I look forward to all the friends this experience may hold.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm moving to Cork in the hope of becoming a member of the community myself and eventually living and working in and around the city. I have a working visa for a full year and a few jobs I'm looking at for the coming months. However, for my first few weeks I'll be getting settled and I was just recommended to this site as a way to avoid expensive hostels, as a way to meet new folks and make new friends!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music is probably my favorite way of consuming art. Some of my favorite artists are Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes, Frank Ocean, Major Lazer, The Beach Boys, Bon Iver, Kendrick Lamar, and James Blake. My favorite movie is probably O Brother Where Art Thou? and by extension I suppose I would have to say the Odyssey is a favorite book. Malcolm Gladwell would be a favorite author though.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've sang in Saint Peter's Basilica for mass after being awake for roughly thirty hours straight following a red-eye flight from New York!

Teach, Learn, Share

I majored in research and therapeutic psychology at school and also studied a good deal of philosophy and political theory. I'm always happy to talk but can come especially informed in those topics! I'm also an experienced hiker and trip leader and can tell you all about New England. I also know more about music than the average person and, surprise surprise, love to talk about it. Last, I brew a mean cup of herbal tea. All this knowledge is on offer!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am very talkative and love to think so I'll always be good for conversation and company. I also love to meet new people and see new places and can almost guarantee an entertaining time anywhere from the pub to the museum. I can sing and I have a lot of stories! I've seen almost 2/3 of the United States, gone to a liberal arts college, a Catholic Boys high school, and I've had jobs as a snowboard instructor, a museum docent, a special needs residential counselor, a wilderness trip leader, and an environmental lobbyist in Washington D.C. Lots to talk about. I'm also very tidy and aesthetically minded so not only will I pick up after myself, I may clean just for the fun of it! Overall, I just really like meeting new people and hearing their stories.
