USEFUL INFORMATION FOR TRAVELLERS:
BULGARIA - less than 7 million ppl, one of the very unique cultures in the world. We use Cyrillic alphabet (yep, Russians use it too), 1 euro = 1.95583 bulgarian leva fixed rate. Bulgaria is famous for the yoghurt, tomatoes, and rose oil. :)
https://bnr.bg/en/post/101438613/5-facts-testifying-that-bulgaria-has-one-of-the-oldest-cultures-in-europe
FOOD is very mixed with Greek and Turkish cusines. European style of cooking. Try "banitsa s boza" for breakfast, "gyuvetche" with meat for lunch/dinner, and definitely "shopska salad". Drink Mavrud wine or Slivova rakiya for alcohol. Water from pot is drinkable too. The best water, though, is one of the 235 springs we have.
SOFIA - 1.2 mln ppl, offers all a capital may have. Could see sightseeings for 5 hours, all is downtown. A bit away (buses or taxi for 8 EUR one way) Boyana church (5 EUR entry fee) and/or National Historical Museum are worth visiting too. Stay 2 days or 2 nights.
RILA MONASTERY - biggest one in Bulgaria. One day trip from Sofia - buses depart 10.30 from Serdica bus station, and come back from 15.00. One way - 8 EUR ticket.
RILA MOUNTAIN - great for hiking or reaching the highest peak on the Balkans - Musala peak, 2925 m. "The heart of Bulgaria" is the area of the Seven Rila Lakes, must see for all mountainers or spiritual enthusiasts.
VITOSHA MOUNTAIN - If you love hiking from Sofia, nice routes could take you up to the top for 4 hours a regular walk.
BELOGRADCHIK - one of the new world wonders - natural rocks phenomenon with nice view around (212 km north from Sofia), better rent a car to there.
PLOVDIV - second big city (half a mln ppl), one of the 5 oldest in the world. Great atmosphere, see the sunset from one of the three hills at the old city. 2 days max are enough to see it all. Eat in Pavaj restaurant.
ASENOVGRAD and BACHKOVO MONASTERY - have a day away to the near by city (15 km away) for seeing Asen's Fortress and some 20 km more to the monastery (2nd big one, single bed there is 15 EUR/night). You could hike in the mountain near it. it's a reserved and very chilly area.
BELINTASH - ancient Thracian sanctuary over a huge rock, some 35 km southeast from Plovdiv. It's worth seeing the stars from there. Accommodation available at the village nearby - Mostovo.
PERPERIKON - ancient Thracian city cut in the rocks near Kardzhali. It's worth seeing if you have more time and head 100 km southeast from Plovdiv. Small villages in Rhodopi mountain are great to explore real Bulgarian spirit.
HISSAR / VELINGRAD - the s.p.a. capitals of the Balkans - natural hot water springs and public baths since Roman times. It is great to heal nerves, bones, skin, etc. problems. Men and women sections are available in most baths or work one day for males, next for females. Dont bring valuable things inside. Some gypsies visit those often. People bathe all nude. 2.5 EUR entry fee.
STAROSEL - biggest ritual complex of Thracian king yet found (50 km north from Plovdiv), KARLOVO, SOPOT (60 km north from Plovdiv) - small cities with some old houses from the Revival, famous for the revolutionaries who used to live there.
KOPRIVSHTITSA - if you want to see typical old houses, it's worth seeing it, 1 day.
(distance from Sofia is 107 km east, and from Plovdiv is 90 km northwest)
VELIKO TARNOVO - the old capital of Bulgaria, very picturesque city, moved over some hills and old fortress in the heart of the city surrounded by a river. 2 days are enough. Eat at "Shtastlivetsa" (or Ego) pizza restaurant.
SEA SIDE
VARNA and BURGAS may seem similar, have airports (cheap flights in summer only), and have lots of resorts nearby. See NESSEBAR and SOZOPOL (semi-islands with old houses), both near Burgas. Or the Stone forest near Varna.
