About Me

CURRENT MISSION

...to find the holy grail! well... perhaps if that grail were a metaphor for new memories, wonderful experiences, and a few photos to remind me of it all when I'm too old to remember.

ABOUT ME

I was raised to be a very independent person. I've rarely felt the sort of pressures to fit in that so many of my peers describe to me.

I've been a college radio DJ for 3 semesters, but took this last semester off.

I spend a lot of time in my head. I've experienced the good and the bad that comes from this. Despite all the brain activity, I still manage to put my foot in my mouth on a fairly regular basis.

I'm not always comfortable with being in conflict, yet at the same time, I have fun arguing or "bantering".

I'm working on my B.S. in Communication Studies, and am minoring in Sociology. This last semester, I've been doing research on cross-gender best-friends.

I'm becoming more critical of the basic structures of society, and I realize that this will worry some people. While I don't feel that I have a absolutely solid understanding of every single aspect of this, I'm more than happy to talk to you about where my head is on this.

Along similar lines, I'm a feminist (no, not a 'femiNazi'), and have shocked friends when I've told them this, when they've been under the assumption that feminists are stubbornly devoted to making women all the power in a society. Thats ridiculous... I would love to level the playing field (between gender, race, sexuality, ability, etc.) Maybe this isn't the same sort of problem in other countries as it is in the United States, I don't know. I'd be surprised if there is total equality anywhere, but I'm willing to look!

There's no way I can fully describe myself in words (though it seems that I've tried). Contact me, and find out more for yourself.

PHILOSOPHY

I cannot live life simply to exist, or to 'get through' one moment in anticipation of the next. Life is too unpredictable, too filled with options and opportunity. It would be a shame to waste it away waiting for better choices.

I try to regularly ask myself:
Am I living my life fully/deeply?
Am I living or merely existing?
What can I improve about myself?
What can I do to improve this world?
(and especially:)
What would my child-self feel about who I am and what I've done?

Have you ever looked at your life and noticed
everything you've ever done had been done before.
be you the first on the moon=
you're just one of many who've taken the first step on untouched lands:

Everyone searches for their purpose
try to find their way
try to be themselves
when all that we do is the same.

You take the left, and I'll take the right-
does it really matter the way,
when our destination is the same?

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am completely new to CouchSurfing. While my current batch of college roommates wouldn't be comfortable with hosting people in our apartment, I have opportunities where I would LOVE to do so!

Music, Movies, and Books

I haven't had much opportunity to read much beyond my textbooks lately... I've been working my way through a mystery novel for the past year and a half. On that note, I'm definitely into reading some Marilyn Frye, I love her sass and accessibility.

Music- I adore it. I adore it so much, that (related or unrelated) my various friends-in-bands have a devoted supporter, my room is almost never silent (though not obnoxiously loud), my vocal chords are often vibrating, and my iPod is frequently dying.

I've had periods in my life where I've alternated between most of the more mainstream varieties of rock. I enjoy the blues, some du-wop, mainstream rock of the 1960s on to the present, alternative, funk, metal, some pop, some punk, some reggae, jazz, r&b and old-school rap.

Rock is always my 'homebase'. I would love to see some funk-metal and folk-rap fusions... anyone have any suggestions?

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Have you ever climbed up a ship's rigging, straight up the mast, then upside down and up into the crow's nest? Getting back down is just as much of a rush, but standing up top and looking at how far down the deck, the dock, and the water are... it's thrillingly petrifying, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Walking along the family homestead in Palmer, Alaska in the summer... the trees so vibrant, the vistas so... amazing and inspiring (I've made a mural) and the creek that skirts the edge, filled with such smoothed out stones over which the salmon swim every fall... it's incredible!

Went to a ropes course in the woods with a group. We came upon a muddy creek over which two cables were suspended. We all crossed a few times feet on one, and hands on the other. I was the only one to take the challenge to cross on only the bottom. Halfway across, my balance faltered, and I was suddenly suspended a few feet above the water. It was then that the instructor decided to warn me about the snakes.
