One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Many of the memorable moments I have experienced simply involve conversations with people from all over the world. I have heard so many stories-- be it sad, happy, funny, angry-- that have given me insight into how people live all over the world. I have learned a lot from others, and believe that talking to locals around the world provides the highest form of cultural knowledge and understanding. One specific event, apart from talking to people, that stands out to me would be seeing the land-jumpers in Vanuatu. It is a ritual that the natives believe fertilizes the earth for the coming harvest. In this ritual, a giant, 100 ft tall tower is built using trees from the jungle and vines to hold everything together. They then send young men up the tower, at different heights, and they jump from the tower with only vines tied to their ankles. The vines only help break the fall however, and they smack into the mud after the long fall. It was an amazing cultural experience that I will never forget.
