One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I’ve traveled to more than 30 countries in the last ten years, always traveling independently and very often solo. I have found myself attracted more and more by destinations and activities that benefit the local community and help preserve the environment. Here is a tater of what I’ve gotten up to:

- I’ve stayed in a remote Indonesian village called Wae Rebo that has kept up its unique and incredible culture for nearly 1000 years and is now at the forefront of community-based travel.

- In the space of a day in Siem Reap, Cambodia I found myself visiting rats who are helping to solve the problem of land mines in the country, I bought items made of discarded plastic bags and enjoyed a show held by villagers trained in local arts thanks to an NGO.

- I have visited a local community in Egypt which is keeping the tradition of papyrus (handmade paper making) alive thanks also to the help from tourism.

- In Melbourne, instead of blindly following the ‘must go’ restaurants, I ate at a place which promotes the ‘pay as you feel’ model and employees volunteers from underprivileged backgrounds.

These experiences were enriching to me personally and led me to believe that there’s so much we can do to make traveling not only unharmful but something that can make a positive change to the world.

Teach, Learn, Share

Willing to teach Chinese and cooking Chinese food (especially spicy Yunnan-style);
