Présentation
À propos de moi
Hi! I'm Daniel. I was born in Los Angeles, California, but came to live in Brazil as a small child. I grew up in Curitiba, Paraná state, but now live in São Paulo, where I study journalism at USP, the University of São Paulo. In February I will be starting a trip through the USA, in hopes of learning more about the country where I was born from within, while doing street portrait photography and writing about my experience. I speak fluent Portuguese and English, and work as a freelance translator.
Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing
I enjoy getting to know new people and forming connections! It's my main reason for traveling and also something I do whenever I can at home. Couchsurfing seems to be a way of doing that while also easing the financial burden of travel in the USA, which is extremely expensive for someone used to dealing in Brazilian currency, especially in the current economic climate. I'd also love to meet foreigners exploring São Paulo and show them around as best as I can given that I don't have a car and my home is not within walking distance of a subway station.
Centres d'intérêt
Making friends! I'm the kind of person who will sit down next to someone and just start a conversation. I enjoy photography and have spent the last year getting better at it. I wouldn't say I'm a good photographer yet, but I'm definitely learning and have done work I'm proud of. I play guitar and like all sorts of music - I'm not a snob; if you have a reason to like a certain type of music I'm sure I'll find one too! I'm also a big geek into video-games, tech and sci-fi. I took classes on bartending and drink mixing here in Brazil and will mix you delicious drinks if you're into that, including our world renowned caipirinha. Also super into science and specifically astronomy.

Morceaux de musique, films et livres
My current favorite song is Pelas Tabelas, written by Chico Buarque and performed by Roberta Sá (give it a listen, it's on youtube). I'm also a huge fan of the Beatles, Arctic Monkeys (and indie rock in general), David Bowie, Cage the Elephant, Lupe Fiasco,
As for movies, my current favorite is In Bruges. I'm also a Christopher Nolan fan (Memento, Inception, Interstellar, etc), big-time Star Wars nerd and movie fan in general. I also really enjoy Edgar Wright and Tarantino films as well as classics from 12 Angry Men to Casablanca.
I'd like to use my travels as an opportunity to read more! My favorite book is probably Nineteen Eighty-four, by George Orwell, and my favorite short story is The Last Question, by Isaac Asimov (I looove that sort of sci-fi). My guilty pleasure is airport fiction (i.e. the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child or the John Rain series by Barry Eisler).
Une aventure extraordinaire que j'ai vécue
Hopefully in a few months my answer to this will be "traveled all over the USA by myself"! I won't spoil here stories that are better told over a beer.
Enseignez, apprenez, partagez
If you have a camera sitting around I'd be happy to teach you the basics of photography. I can also fix simple computer stuff and help you translate things from English to Portuguese and vice-versa. I am an endless repository of worthless knowledge about anything and everything, which has its upsides and downsides.
I love learning new things and skills, and can find a reason to be interested in nearly anything. My whole reason to travel is to learn and share.
Ce que j'aimerais partager avec mes hôtes
The dishes and the bill, for one! I'll do as much as I can to avoid being a burden if you host me. I can also share perspectives from a very different culture, and stories from my time in Brazil. Of course, anyone who hosts me will also receive an invitation to São Paulo when I get back.
