About Me

I am a very open-minded person that loves a good and interesting conversation.
I love the history and culture of my country and I love living in Lisbon, which I find one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Politically speaking, I'm a leftist.

I studied biology (biochemistry, genetics, evolution, development) and then I did a PhD in history of science. Right now I work as a researcher in science education. I'm also interested in lots of other stuff, like theatre, contemporary dance and writing.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like to learn things about different countries and cultures, and I think that couchsurfing can be a good opportunity to do that! I don't really like to simply turn on "tourist mode" when in another country. It's much more interesting if you get to know some place through the accumulated experience of someone that lives or has lived in that place and knows what it really means.

Interests

I have a lot of different interests. I love European history and the history of ideas, and that's why I study and do research in history of science. I'm also very much into education because I think it can really be a powerful tool to change the world for the best. I also love theater and dance, and see a lot of plays. I've started to write theater plays last year and I study contemporary dance at a school in Lisbon. But there's always time for a good conversation, movies with friends, or some drinks at night.

Music, Movies, and Books

Authors (books): Italo Calvino, Mia Couto, Umberto Eco, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, José Saramago, Fernando Pessoa. I'm very much into philosophy also: Slavoj Zizek, Byung-Chul Han, Anselm Jappe.

Directors: David Cronenberg, Sam Mendes, Hayao Miyazaki, Gus van Sant, Nanni Moretti, Steve McQueen, Sophia Coppola. My favorite movie is The Dreamers (2003), by Bertolucci.

Series: Mad Men, The Knick, Girls, Game of Thrones, Angels in America. My all-time favorite series still is the amazing Six Feet Under.

Music: Wim Mertens, Jeff Buckley, Zero7, Jamie Cullum, Muse, Róisín Murphy, Moloko, Beatles, Gotan Project, Vampire Weekend, Sia, Fever Ray, and the list could go on...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Well, I did manage to finish my PhD... Doing an interrail across Europe was pretty cool. But the most amazing thing for me, personally, was to write a full theater play and seeing it staged at the National Theater at Lisbon! By professional actors! (I won a writing contest) And now they're going to publish it!

Teach, Learn, Share

I've studied biology for 5 years and I've worked in a lab for a year, so I know some things about genetics and evolution. In my PhD I studied 19th cent European history and history of biology (that means I know a lot about Darwin). In the PhD I studied a Portuguese institution, so I know a lot about the history of Portugal.

I'd like to improve my French and Spanish. Maybe even learn some German (even though it's difficult!). I like to talk with people from the performing arts about work methodologies. I'm very interested in politics, and I really enjoy to learn things about the political situation of other countries. Right now I'm studying early 20th cent history , so I'm very eager to learn anything from that period.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love to go for a walk, to talk about the history of Lisbon and of Portugal, if I have the time, and also to show nice places to eat. I have a very flexible schedule right now, but sometimes I do get a bit busy. If I'm not so much available, I can still give you all the tips you need to fully enjoy your time in Lisbon.
