PHILOSOPHY

Epicureanism Epicurus believed that pleasure is the greatest good. But the way to attain pleasure was to live modestly and to gain knowledge of the workings of the world and the limits of one's desires. This led one to attain a state of tranquility (ataraxia) and freedom from fear, as well as absence of bodily pain (aponia). El epicureísmo es un sistema filosófico que defiende la búsqueda de una vida buena y feliz mediante la administración inteligente de placeres y dolores, la ataraxia ("ausencia de turbación") y los vínculos de amistad entre sus correligionarios.The combination of these two states is supposed to constitute happiness in its highest form. Although Epicureanism is a form of hedonism, insofar as it declares pleasure as the sole intrinsic good, its conception of absence of pain as the greatest pleasure and its advocacy of a simple life make it different from "hedonism" as it is commonly understood. Epicuro proponía la realización de la vida buena y feliz, la ataraxia y las relaciones amistosas entre sus correligionarios. Este placer no debía limitarse sólo al cuerpo, como preconizaba el hedonismo cirenaico, sino que debía ser también intelectual, ya que el hombre es un todo. El epicureísmo es un sistema filosófico que defiende la búsqueda de una vida buena y feliz mediante la administración inteligente de placeres y dolores, la ataraxia ("ausencia de turbación") y los vínculos de amistad entre sus correligionarios. Además, para Epicuro la presencia del placer o felicidad era un sinónimo de la ausencia de dolor, o de cualquier tipo de aflicción: el hambre, la tensión sexual, el aburrimiento, etc. Era un equilibrio perfecto entre la mente y el cuerpo que proporcionaba la serenidad o ataraxia. L'épicurisme est une école philosophique fondée à Athènes par Épicure en 306 av. J.-C. Elle entrait en concurrence avec l'autre grande pensée de l'époque, le stoïcisme, fondé en 301 av. J-C. L'épicurisme est axé sur la recherche d'un bonheur et d'une sagesse dont le but est l'atteinte de l'ataraxie, la tranquillité de l'âme. C'est une doctrine matérialiste et atomiste. L'épicurisme professe que pour éviter la souffrance il faut éviter les sources de plaisir qui ne sont ni naturelles ni nécessaires. Il ne prône donc nullement la recherche effrénée du plaisir, comme beaucoup le pensent à tort. Cette vision erronée, favorisée il est vrai par des personnes comme Horace, qui se définissait lui-même comme un « porc du jardin d'Épicure », a été soulignée par l'Église catholique, qui rejetait le matérialisme de cette philosophie.
