Overview
About Me
I'm Dan, a 27 year old Brit from southern England. In August 2016 I quit my job, left my London flat and said goodbye to my cat to bicycle across Eurasia.
I've always wanted to see more of the world and experience different cultures and places, and I figured a bicycle was the best way to do it. Plus it's really cheap!
The trip ended being 47,000km and taking nearly three years. In that time there were highs and lows, but the one thing that remained constant was the unending generosity shown to me by people all over the world. Not only through CS hosts, but also thousands of spontaneous and random encounters with lovely strangers.
Thanks to the help of these people, I eventually made it to NZ and am now living and working here, sharing a small farmhouse with a fellow cycle tourer called Markus https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/markus-kauhanen-1?action=show&controller=user_profiles
We are both keen to share some of the generosity we experienced and pay it forward, so please feel free to message either of us, or both! We are some distance from the nearest shop but we have a car so we can transport things, including bikes if needs be. There is a separate sleep out that you are free to use, plenty of floor space or a big garden for camping. We also have a friendly cat called Whakameharo, which we are told means wonderful, living with us.
Happy riding!
PHILOSOPHY
At the end of your life memories are the only commodity that will matter, make sure to make some good ones.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Couchsurfing seems like a fantastic way to meet new people and get a genuinely local insight into an area. Looking forward to both surfing and hosting whenever possible.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
Every experience I've had using couchsurfing has been unique and wonderful. I hope to one day repay the kindness people have shown me on my cycle tour by helping others.
Interests
Cycling, climbing, caving, hiking, essentially anything outdoors!
Music, Movies, and Books
Probably the Chillies, but do not limit myself to enjoying a specific genre of music. If it sounds good I'll like it.
Lord of the Rings, Band of Brothers, Serenity - it would be a long list.
Anything Chomsky or Orwell, Catch-22, Sapiens, The Kite Runner, A song of Ice and Fire ect.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Abseiled down a freezing underground waterfall and ventured into a recently dug cave chamber in which only a few people had ever set foot.
Teach, Learn, Share
Everyone is unique so everyone has something to share. I can give a pretty accurate insight into cycle touring, or what is like being a 27 year old from South West England. Above all I am very keen to learn!
